🌆 New Yorkers cautiously impressed by Zohran Mamdani’s White House charm offensive

Just a day after New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani got a surprisingly warm reception from President Trump, locals are sharing their thoughts — and they’re cautiously optimistic.

Despite Trump previously calling Mamdani a “lunatic” and falsely labeling him a communist, New Yorkers say they were a bit impressed with how he handled the meeting.

“I really don’t like the guy, but I’m glad that he was able to go in there and do a good job with the president,” said John Lani, spotted running through Central Park. “Maybe we’ll get some funding, maybe congestion pricing won’t be blocked, maybe some help for the subway — we’ll see.”

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who served three terms in the New York State Assembly, won the mayoral race in every borough except Staten Island, a Republican stronghold.

Near Central Park, locals praised Mamdani’s poise during his televised engagement with Trump, even if many remain skeptical about how he’ll perform once taking office on January 1.

📊 Data from CUNY’s Center for Urban Research shows areas around Columbus Circle and the Trump International Hotel leaned toward former Gov. Andrew Cuomo during the race.

Voters remain mixed:
“I hope everyone’s very successful. I didn’t support either party,” one said.

High stakes ahead
The relationship between Trump and Mamdani could prove critical for key issues in NYC, from funding to congestion pricing and subway improvements.
