New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani isn’t easing quietly into office — he’s kicking off his tenure with a New Year’s celebration packed with famous names and big energy.
Following tradition, Mamdani will be sworn in in Times Square just moments after the ball drops at midnight, with Sen. Bernie Sanders and New York Attorney General Letitia James administering the oath. But the festivities won’t stop there.
On New Year’s Day, the city will host what is being billed as an “Inauguration for a New Era Block Party,” stretching along Broadway from Liberty Street up to City Hall. Think less stiff ceremony, more open-air festival — and yes, Hollywood will be in the mix.
Mamdani’s inaugural committee reads like a crossover between politics and pop culture. Members include children’s star Ms. Rachel, Wednesday favorite Luis Guzman, acclaimed actor-filmmaker John Turturro, actress-activist Cynthia Nixon, comedian-writer The Kid Mero, actor Kal Penn, creator Julio Torres, playwright Cole Escola, jazz legend Sonny Rollins, A24 executive Sara’o Bery, and novelist Colson Whitehead, among others.
The entertainment connection isn’t exactly accidental. Mamdani grew up around the film world — he’s the son of award-winning director Mira Nair — and his campaign leaned heavily into creative storytelling and social media savvy. TikTok, YouTube, and direct-to-camera videos helped fuel his surprise rise, while more traditional tools like TV and mailers filled in the gaps.
Nair says her son’s political style mirrors her own lifelong artistic questions.
“What I love about Zohran is the way he recognizes the many identities that make up our lives and our city,” she said recently. “He has brought visibility to people who have long been treated as marginal — and now he is asking those questions on the biggest stage.”
The January 1st block party is set for 1 p.m., and the message is clear: Mamdani wants his first day in office to feel less like a formality and more like the beginning of something new. Whether other politicians can replicate his approach remains to be seen — many are already trying.
