Michelle Obama Reflects on the Emotional Impact of Seeing the White House East Wing Demolished
Former First Lady Michelle Obama opened up about her reaction to the demolition of the White House’s East Wing, a decision made by former President Donald Trump to make way for his $300 million ballroom
During a November 25 appearance on the Jamie Kern Lima Show podcast, Obama shared her feelings while witnessing the changes to the iconic building. When asked, “What did it feel like for you and your body when you saw the East Wing being demolished?” she responded thoughtfully.
“It’s not about me, it’s about us and our traditions and what they stand for,” Obama said. “In my body, I felt confusion because I’m like, ‘Well, who are we? What do we value and who decides that?’”
Reflecting on the broader significance of the demolition, Obama emphasized that her concern was about the nation, not the building itself. “That’s what’s been on my mind a lot lately—‘Who are we? What are the rules?’ I’m confused about our norms and mores, not the laws, but how we live together. That’s the part that hurts. It’s not the house… I’m just trying to understand the assignment. I think I felt a loss for us as a nation.”
Obama also clarified that, while the East Wing holds historical and symbolic value, it is not a personal residence. “Personally, that’s not our house,” she said. “That’s the People’s House.”
The demolition of the East Wing, which includes the First Lady’s office, the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, and other historic spaces, was confirmed by the White House in October. A spokesperson described the changes as part of “long-needed upgrades” aimed at benefiting future presidents and visitors, emphasizing that the work was done at no taxpayer expense.
The decision has drawn criticism from other public figures as well. Former First Lady Hillary Clinton condemned the move, stating on social media in October, “It’s not his house. It’s your house. And he’s destroying it.”:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(749x0:751x2):format(webp)/White-House-East-Wing-demolition-112525-4d8c4232ecda4c78b3775b2006180d39.jpg)
The modern East Wing was originally constructed in 1942 during President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration. During the demolition, First Lady Melania Trump and her staff have been temporarily relocated from the East Wing.
