Sir Keir Starmer has refused to rule out sacking Rachel Reeves as Chancellor of the Exchequer.
In the final Prime Minister’s Questions before next week’s local election, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch quizzed Sir Keir on whether he would reshuffle Ms Reeves out of No11.
The Leader of the Opposition said: “Yesterday we learnt that the cost of government borrowing is now the highest in two decades, that’s under him.
“Instead of getting a grip on the economy, the Chancellor is briefing out rent controls to curry favour with left-wing backbenchers.
“This is not a serious way to run the economy. It is time for the Prime Minister to give her an easier job.
“Will he listen to businesses, listen to the country and reshuffle her?”
The Prime Minister replied: “At the Spring Statement the Chancellor was very proud to say inflation was down to three per cent and falling, six interest rates cuts, we’ve seen the growth figures for the early part of this year.
“And she says well the cost of borrowing’s gone up. Yes, because there’s a conflict in Iran. And what did she want to do? When I say we wouldn’t be dragged into our war, what did she do? She said we should jump in with both feet without regard to the consequences.”
“I didn’t hear him say he’s not reshuffling the Chancellor,” Mrs Badenoch quipped. “It sounds like she’s toast.”
The Leader of the Opposition went on to issue a warning to Sir Keir about the potential threat posed by leadership rivals, including Angela Rayner.
She also pointed out how one Labour MP had admitted “his days are numbered”.

Ban payments from X to MPs to protect democracy, Ed Davey says
Social media firms like X would be “banned” from making payments to MPs under Liberal Democrat proposals.
Party leader Sir Ed Davey said the move would help protect democracy, which he warned is “under threat from powerful men outside our country who are trying to destroy it”.
Sir Ed said the Lib Dems would also prohibit anyone who has served in a government overseas from donating to British political parties.
Foreign nationals are already banned from doing so.
Richard Tice hits out at ‘appalling’ antisemitic stabbing in Golders Green
Reform UK Deputy Leader Richard Tice has hit out at the “appalling” double stabbing in Golders Green.
Speaking to GB News, Mr Tice said: “This is just another appalling attack on the Jewish community, clearly antisemitism at the heart of this.
“We understand that a knife man was running down the street looking for Jewish people to to stab, and our thoughts and prayers are with those two who have been stabbed.
“When does this stop? The irony of the fact that these victims were treated by Hatzola, the same volunteer ambulance organisation whose ambulances were firebombed just a few weeks ago, it’s just appalling.
“And once again, it’s volunteer security groups that are having to protect the Jewish community in and around Golders Green and other areas.”

Tories refer Nigel Farage to parliamentary standards watchdog after failing to declare £5million gift from 2024
The Tories have referred Nigel Farage to the parliamentary standards watchdog after failing to declare a £5million gift in 2024.
Earlier today, Mr Farage discussed how he received a seven-figure gift to spend on security arrangements from Thailand-based British billionaire Christopher Harborne in 2024.
While the Clacton MP said this was a gift before he re-entered politics, this period fell within 12 months before he became a member.
Conservative Party chairman Kevin Hollinrake said: “As a new Member of Parliament, Nigel Farage was obliged to report to the House of Commons all political donations and gifts he had received during the previous 12 months.
“He did not.
“The Conservatives are therefore today referring Nigel Farage to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner.”

Sir Ed Davey has accused Nigel Farage of “aiding and abetting” powerful world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He went on to describe Reform UK as a “franchise of Maga politics” while announcing the Liberal Democrats would outlaw payments to MPs from X.
The Liberal Democrat leader said: “British democracy is under more serious threat than at any point in my lifetime.
“It’s under threat from powerful men outside our country who are trying to destroy it – Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Vladimir Putin. And there are dangerous forces inside our politics who are aiding and abetting that destruction.
“Nigel Farage and Reform UK are not a British political movement, they are a franchise of Maga politics, trying to import Trump’s divisive agenda into our communities. These are not the people we want running our councils.”

“There is an epidemic of violence against Jewish people.
“It is now a national emergency and needs to be treated as such by the Government and public authorities.”
Tories condemn ‘appalling antisemitic attack’ as they blame extremism ‘running rampant’
The Tories have condemned the “appalling antisemitic attack” as they blamed extremism “running rampant” in the UK.
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: “This is yet another appalling antisemitic attack. The Jewish community are not being properly protected from this hate.
“We have seen Iran sponsoring antisemitic attacks and Islamist extremism run rampant.
“The Government must urgently step up tangible actions against antisemitism, Iran and Islamist extremism.”
Golders Green MP declared the stabbing amounts to ‘an attack on Britain itself’
Labour MP for Finchley and Golders Green Sarah Sackman said attacks “on British Jews are an attack on Britain itself”.
This afternoon, two men were knifed in the London borough
She confirmed: “The suspect has been detained. I want to thank the vital work of Shomrim, who apprehended the perpetrator; Hatzola, the police and CST (Community Security Trust).
“The attacks on British Jews are an attack on Britain itself. It is unconscionable that Jews are being targeted in this way.
“I am meeting with the Home Secretary imminently to discuss the urgent situation.”

Shabana Mahmood has issued a response after two people were stabbed in Golders Green.
Eyewitnesses told GB News two people were knifed near Heather Gardens.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said: “My thoughts are with the victims of the abhorrent attack in Golders Green this morning, and the Jewish community.
“I’m grateful for the work of the community and the police in apprehending the suspect, and to the emergency services for their quick response.
“The suspect is now in custody and I’m being kept updated on the situation.”
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy condemned the attack was “horrific”.
“No one should live in fear because of who they are,” he said. “We stand with the Jewish community and we must root out this hatred.”

“Thank you to Shomrim, Hatzola and the police for acting swiftly. Those responsible will be brought to justice.”
Slew of ‘sycophantic’ Labour MPs pack PMQs with ‘adoring questions’
Kemi Badenoch blasted a group of “sycophantic” Labour MPs packing the latest rendition of Prime Minister’s Questions with “adoring questions”.
Addressing MPs, Natasha Irons, the Labour MP for Croydon East, heaped praise onto the PM during the weekly Commons debate.
“It is this Labour Government that is finally giving Croydon the backing that it needs,” she said.
“But building a Croydon for all starts with ensuring our residents have the dignity and stability of a decent home.
“With hundreds of families in my constituency facing homelessness through no-fault evictions, will the Prime Minister outline how this gov is progressing on its plans to fix the private renter sector, and ensure renters in Croydon have the security and peace of mind that they deserve?”
In response, Sir Keir thanked the “brilliant” representative for Croydon before launching into a read-out of Labour’s latest housing policy.
Baggy Shanker, MP for Derby South, was another who piled praise onto his party’s senior leadership.
He branded Rachel Reeves as a “brilliant” Chancellor for “Team Derby”, asking how they plan to make the constituency “part of our success”.
David Burton-Sampson for Southend West and Leigh, Lee Pitcher for Doncaster East and the Isle of Axholme, Pam Cox for Colchester and Catherine West for Hornsey and Friern Barnet were just some of the loyal backbenchers who further piled praise onto the Prime Minister.
‘Promised change, delivered chaos!’ SNP Westminster leader delivers scathing slapdown to Prime Minister in fiery PMQs row
SNP’s Westminster leader Stephen Flynn delivered a scathing slapdown to the Prime Minister in a fiery row during the final PMQs of the parliamentary session.
The SNP leader took aim at Sir Keir Starmer for “promising change that has delivered chaos” over the course of his premiership.
Mr Flynn said: “Does he understand that, yes, it’s because of inaction on the cost-of-living crisis, yes, it’s because of the debacle of the winter fuel payment, yes, it’s because of 1,000 jobs being lost every month in Scotland’s North Sea and the closure of Grangemouth, yes it’s because of his judgment on Matthew Doyle and Peter Mandelson.
“But above all else, the reason why his time in office will soon be coming to a close is because he promised change that has delivered chaos.”
Sir Keir replied: “I’m proud of what this Labour Government has achieved and I’m proud of what we will achieve.”
Ed Davey and Keir Starmer lock horns over ‘frivolous accusations’ amid Peter Mandelson scandal
Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey and Sir Keir Starmer locked horns over “frivolous accusations” amid the Peter Mandelson scandal.
Sir Christian Turner replaced Lord Mandelson as UK Ambassador to the US after the ex-Cabinet minister was fired.
But the newly-appointed ambassador turned heads when a leaked recording saying the Prime Minister was “on the ropes”.
Sir Ed asked: “The Prime Minister has had to fire one US ambassador for lying. Does he fear he’s going to have to fire a second one for telling the truth?”
The PM retorted: “Given what I’ve had thrown at me in the last two weeks by all the opposition parties, that’s the least of my problems. I know he likes stunts, but I was surprised he joined in the one yesterday.”
Hitting back at “frivolous accusations”, the Prime Minister quipped: “Clearly I was wrong to expect anything better from a man in a wetsuit.”
Kemi Badenoch turns ire on PM for ‘putting welfare spending ahead of growth’
Kemi Badenoch has turned her ire on the Prime Minister, accusing him of “putting welfare spending ahead of growth”.
Facing off against the Prime Minister, Mrs Badenoch said: “It’s the end of this session and what a contrast with the beginning.
“Back in July 2024, those benches were full of sycophantic questions from adoring new MPs. Yesterday, the Prime Minister was reduced to begging those same MPs to save his own skin.
“He’s broken his promise to grow the economy, the only thing that’s grown is the welfare bill. So can the Prime Minister tell us how many more people are out of work and claiming Universal Credit since he took office?”
In response, Sir Keir Starmer retorted: “I am very proud of what this Labour Government has achieved in the first session of this Parliament.”
He listed legislation including a youth guarantee, a rise of the national minimum wage, as well as “putting more police on the streets and cut energy bills”.
The PM told the Commons: “I am very proud of what this Labour Government has achieved in the first session of this Parliament.”
Kemi Badenoch mocks Keir Starmer for ‘pleading with a tax dodger to rejoin his Cabinet’ amid reshuffle rumours
Kemi Badenoch has mocked the Prime Minister for “pleading with a tax dodger to rejoin his Cabinet” amid the latest reshuffle rumours.
He said: “He’s lost a Deputy Prime Minister, two Chiefs of Staff, two Cabinet Secretaries, the support of his backbenchers and all his credibility.
“They can jeer as much as they like, they’re gonna have to go to their constituencies and explain to all those people why they did what they did last night.
“The fact is the Prime Minister was reduced to whipping his MPs to save him and pleading with a tax dodger to rejoin his Cabinet. How much longer do we all to have to put up with his shambles?”
Keir Starmer blasts Tories’ ‘silly, baseless political stunt’ after PM survives latest leadership scare
Sir Keir Starmer has blasted the Tories’ “silly baseless political stunt” after the Prime Minister survived the latest challenge to his leadership.
The Labour leader said: “She talks about political games, that’s what she was doing yesterday.
“This House considered that motion and rejected it decisively because everyone saw it for what it was, a desperate, baseless political stunt ahead of the May elections.”
But he added that “nothing” would distract him from “what matters to the British public.”
‘Sounds like she’s toast!’ Kemi Badenoch calls on Keir Starmer to switch out Rachel Reeves in Cabinet reshuffle
Kemi Badenoch has called on the Prime Minister to switch out his Chancellor in a speculated Cabinet reshuffle.
However, Sir Keir refused to rule out the reshuffle – driving the Tory leader to leap on Ms Reeves’ unpopularity.
The Tory leader said: “It is time the Chancellor gives her an easy job. So will he listen to businesses, listen to the country and reshuffle the Chancellor?”
But Sir Keir dodged the question, simply responding: “At the Spring Statement the Chancellor was very proud to say inflation was down to three per cent and falling, six interest rates cuts, we’ve seen the growth figures for the early part of this year.
“And she says well the cost of borrowing’s gone up. Yes, because there’s a conflict in Iran. And what did she want to do? When I say we wouldn’t be dragged into our war, what did she do? She said we should jump in with both feet without regard to the consequences.”
“I didn’t hear him say he’s not reshuffling the Chancellor… It sounds like she’s toast!” Mrs Badenoch chuckled.
Keir Starmer ‘reduced to begging own MPs’ in sleaze vote, Kemi Badenoch slams

PA
Kemi Badenoch said Sir Keir Starmer was “reduced to begging his own MPs to back him” in the crunch sleaze vote yesterday.
The Conservative motion was voted down after 335 Labour MPs voted to avoid referring the Prime Minister to the Commons ethics watchdog over the Peter Mandelson scandal.
Sir Keir was criticised after Downing Street commanded MPs to toe the party line and abide a three-line whip in support for their leader.
Still, some 15 rebels voted in favour of the Conservative motion.

Sir Keir Starmer has set off for this week’s rendition of Prime Minister’s Question after a challenging week in office.

Attorney General accused of ‘prioritising interests of Iran’s IRGC over British veterans’
Lord Hermer has been accused of “prioritising the interests of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps over those of British veterans”.
Last week, it was revealed the Attorney General pursued compensation claims against UK soldiers on behalf of Iraqi clients – despite receiving warnings their allegations were fabricated.
As a result, critics have accused Sir Keir Starmer’s top ally of leading a “witch-hunt” of British troops.
Ex-National Security minister Tom Tugendhat claimed the Attorney General’s position was now “untenable”.
Speaking at an event by think tank Policy Exchange, the Tonbridge & Malling MP said: “He has prioritised – by choice, if also by ignorance – the interests of agents of the IRGC.
“Even if his action was unwitting, his belief that those who pursued prosecution of those we ask to protect us are more worthy of praise than the soldiers who risk their lives, demonstrates a failure of judgement and raises real questions about the advice he offers the Government.
“Those who lie about our troops encourage others to kill them. That’s treason. No minister, no citizen, should praise that.”
Borrowing costs SKYROCKET to ‘levels not seen since financial crisis’ as Rachel Reeves faces ‘energy crunch’
Analysts are warning that borrowing costs in the UK are on the rise in response to the recent hike in energy prices, reaching “levels not seen since the financial crisis”.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves will have to contend with the ramifications of the US-Iran war, with yields on 10-year gilts climbing beyond the five per cent threshold.
This dramatic hike comes amid the ongoing blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, the vital shipping route which transports 20 per cent of the world’s crude oil.
Brent crude continues to trade at approximately $111 per barrel, marking a three-week peak that keeps energy crisis fears at the forefront of investor concerns.

Nigel Farage has revealed his home was targeted in a suspected arson attack as the Reform UK leader opened up about the “grim reality” of his security arrangements.
The Clacton MP detailed how a lit incendiary device was placed into his letterbox last year, admitting there were “huge dangers in this job”.
Police investigated the attack, which was carried out at the start of 2025. However, no suspects have been identified so far.
“It was an outright arson attempt. I wasn’t at home at the time, but when I came back and opened the door I found the damage,” Mr Farage told The Telegraph.

Nearly 100 Russian ships ignore Keir Starmer’s warning and sail through British waters
Almost 100 Russian ships have sailed through British waters in defiance against Sir Keir Starmer’s decision to let the military board vessels in the so-called shadow fleet.
In the month after the threat made on March 25, at least 98 Russian vessels subject to British sanctions transited its waters.
There has been no announcement of any boarding or detention of the ships, which typically have an opaque ownership structure and can transport oil, grains and arms, often in support of Russia’s war in Ukraine.
LSEG tracking data shows that 63 ships passed within 12 nautical miles of the coastline in the English Channel, the most direct route between the Baltic Sea and southern Europe.

‘The public want answers!’ Steve Reed skewered in fiery GB News grilling as MPs vote to block Keir Starmer sleaze probe
Housing Secretary Steve Reed has been grilled by GB News hosts Alex Armstrong and Ellie Costello after Sir Keir Starmer avoided a sleaze probe into his handling of the Lord Peter Mandelson scandal.
Speaking to the People’s Channel, Mr Reed assured that it has been “one of the most open and transparent processes I can ever remember in Government”.
Mr Reed told Alex and Ellie: “Because of the humble address, it means that tens of thousands of documents are being scrutinised by the Intelligence and Security Committee in order to be released into the public domain.
“We’ve got the Foreign Affairs Select Committee under Emily Thornberry, which is conducting a hearing, the former Permanent Secretary Philip Barton was there yesterday, and Morgan McSweeney, the former Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister. It couldn’t be more open.”

Keir Starmer left ‘on the ropes’ after dodging sleaze inquiry, Tory chairman tells GB News
Sir Keir Starmer has been left “on the ropes” after MPs voted against an investigation into the Prime Minister’s handling of the Peter Mandelson scandal.
The Labour leader dodged the wrath of the ethics watchdog yesterday evening, when 335 MPs voted down the Conservative motion.
Conservative Party chairman Kevin Hollinrake, however, insisted that Sir Keir’s win has not secured his future in Downing Street, with his tenure still on shaky ground.
He said: “He escaped the scrutiny of the Privileges Committee, which we think this matter needed to be referred to because these are very serious allegations, misleading Parliament, sacking one of your top officials in the process.
“These people are instrumental to the good governance for this country.
“This shows a Prime Minister that’s on the ropes and his time is nearly up. We’re not sure when he’ll go, but he’ll go in the coming weeks.”
His words echoed the very remarks of Christian Turner, the current UK Ambassador to the US, who, in a leaked audio, said that the Prime Minister had been “on the ropes” over his predecessor’s appointment.
Keir Starmer ally set to have dinner with ‘close friend’ Angela Rayner this weekend amid Cabinet comeback speculation
A senior Labour minister and ally of Sir Keir Starmer is planning to have dinner with Angela Rayner this weekend, GB News has been told.
When asked whether he would welcome Ms Rayner back to the frontbench, Steve Reed simply said she was “fanastic” in Cabinet, adding: “Angela is a close friend of mine.
“I’m actually having dinner with her this weekend and I’m really looking forward to seeing her.”
Meanwhile, he said Sir Keir was “staying put” after No10 said last week the Labour chief would lead the party into the next election “and beyond”.
‘Even the Tories didn’t do that!’ Steve Reed grilled after Downing Street commands MPs to back Keir Starmer
A senior Labour minister has been grilled on GB News after Downing Street commanded its MPs to vote against an inquiry into Sir Keir Starmer.
Party leaders installed a three-line whip on the vote – and defying such an order could lead to a suspension or permanent ousting from the party.
However, when the Conservatives held such a vote into Boris Johnson’s lockdown parties, party chiefs declared it a free vote.
“Well, it’s perfectly normal for votes in Parliament to be whipped. Pretty much every vote is whipped,” Steve Reed started.
But GB News host Alex Armstrong was quick to intervene, saying: “Sorry to interrupt you, sir, but even even in the papers today, Labour MPs saying even the Tories didn’t pull a stunt like this to bail out Boris Johnson. They had a free vote.”
Group of rebel MPs hold breath for party punishment after voting against Keir Starmer in crunch sleaze vote
A group of rebel MPs are facing punishment from the Labour Party after they voted to launch an inquiry into Sir Keir Starmer over claims he misled Parliament over Peter Mandelson’s vetting process.
Downing Street commanded MPs to vote down the Conservative motion to refer the Prime Minister to the Privileges Committee – the very same ethics watchdog that led to the downfall of Boris Johnson back in 2023.
But 15 rebels defied the order – and voted in favour of such an investigation into their leader.
Sir Keir won the hard-fought battle with 335 votes to 223 yesterday evening.
