‘Heroic’ Father Dies Saving 7-Year-Old Son After Kayak Capsizes at California Lake

A father’s courage and selflessness have left a lasting mark after a tragic accident at Lake Perris State Recreation Area in California. On Saturday, December 7, a 54-year-old man lost his life while keeping his 7-year-old son afloat when their kayak capsized.

According to the California Department of Parks and Recreation, the father acted heroically, holding his young son above water until rescue teams arrived.

“At approximately 4:13 p.m., California State Park officers responded to reports of people in distress near Moreno Beach,” the department said. “Investigators noted that the father courageously kept his son afloat throughout the ordeal, supporting him until rescue personnel arrived.”

Neither the father nor the son were wearing life jackets at the time, though one was found on the kayak. Officers quickly recovered the father, who was unconscious and partially submerged, while the boy was alert and holding onto his dad to stay above water.

The pair were taken to Riverside University Health System. Despite extensive efforts, the father was pronounced dead, while his son is being evaluated and cared for in the hospital. Witnesses described the rescue effort, including nearly 45 minutes of CPR performed by first responders and bystanders.

State Parks and local authorities have expressed their deepest condolences, honoring the father’s bravery and the life he saved.

“This father’s actions embody the ultimate act of love and sacrifice,” the department said. “His courage will not be forgotten, and he has given his son the greatest gift: life.”

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident and remind all visitors to wear properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets while on or near the water.
