A major controversy erupted at President Donald Trump’s rally in Greenville, North Carolina, when the crowd broke into loud chants of “send her back” aimed at Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar.
The chant began after Trump listed several criticisms of Omar, including comments she made about 9/11 that previously drew national attention. The moment followed days of tension after Trump tweeted that four congresswomen — known as “The Squad” — should “go back” and fix the countries they came from before returning to the U.S.
Omar responded online, quoting poet Maya Angelou:
“You may shoot me with your words… But still, like air, I’ll rise.”
She also shared a post from Rep. Ted Lieu, who condemned the chant and urged people to get involved in civic action.
Omar’s spokesperson, Jeremy Klein, added:
“Congresswoman Omar is staying here. You can disagree with her policies — but questioning her Americanness crosses the line.”
Several public figures also reacted.
Kamala Harris, then a presidential candidate, called the chant “vile,” “cowardly,” and “xenophobic,” saying the moment “defiles the office of the President.”
New York Senator and presidential candidate Kirsten Gillibrand criticized the rally atmosphere as well, tying the chant to past controversial statements and expressing determination heading into the election.
The moment quickly spread across social media, sparking a wave of reactions nationwide — and turning the rally into one of the most talked-about political flashpoints of the week.
