The Pentagon power shuffle isn’t slowing down. Lt. Gen. Joseph McGee, one of the Army’s top strategists, is retiring early after less than 18 months on the Joint Chiefs of Staff — and insiders say it’s because he butted heads with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over everything from Ukraine to U.S. strikes in the Caribbean.
Sources tell CNN that McGee repeatedly “pushed back” against Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan “Razin” Caine, sparking tensions that made his position untenable. Others inside the Defense Department whispered that McGee was seen as being too close to the old guard — former Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and ex-Chairman Mark Milley — both of whom Trump and Hegseth have openly clashed with.
💥 “He’s had a target on his back for a while now,” one Pentagon insider told CNN.
In a statement, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell downplayed the rumors, saying simply:
“General McGee is retiring, and the War Department is grateful for his service.”
But McGee’s exit is just the latest in a string of high-ranking departures and dismissals since Hegseth took charge. Among those gone:
- Gen. CQ Brown Jr., the former Joint Chiefs Chairman
- Adm. Lisa Franchetti, Chief of Naval Operations
- Adm. Alvin Holsey, commander of U.S. Southern Command, who announced his retirement after reportedly questioning the legality of Caribbean drug strikes
And it’s not just the Army. The Navy’s Office of Naval Research just lost its boss too — Rear Adm. Kurt Rothenhaus quietly replaced by Rachel Riley, a former McKinsey consultant and Oxford PhD in philosophy, whose only government experience was with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) — yes, the Musk-era agency. 🧠⚙️
Critics are calling it a “loyalty purge” — a wave of retirements and reassignments aimed at reshaping the Pentagon’s top brass to fit Hegseth and Trump’s hardline vision.
One thing’s certain: the Pentagon’s corridors are shaking, and the old guard is falling fast.
