🔥 Newsom Calls Tuesday’s Democratic Wins “A New Moment” for the Party! 🔥
California Gov. Gavin Newsom couldn’t hide his excitement about the Democrats’ sweeping victories on Tuesday, including the approval of Proposition 50, which creates 5 U.S. House seats more favorable to Democrats. He called it “a new moment” for the party as it charts its path forward.
“Clarity, conviction, energy. We’re on the offense, not defense. A resurgent Democratic Party that knows what’s at stake for our democracy,” Newsom said in an interview with CNN.
Beyond California, Democrats scored big in high-profile races across the country: Zohran Mamdani was elected Mayor of New York City, while Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill won in Virginia and New Jersey, respectively.
In Houston, Newsom celebrated the wins and credited Texas Democrats for inspiring Proposition 50. “The energy from the Texas delegation sparked a fire for the Democratic Party, standing up against Greg Abbott and Donald Trump… that was the start of this comeback,” he told CNN.
Earlier this year, Texas Republicans redrew congressional maps to shift 5 U.S. House seats to their favor, prompting Democratic legislators to leave the state in protest. California then took matters into its own hands, with Newsom becoming the face of the redistricting effort.
He acknowledged criticism about the partisan nature of California’s redistricting, including from former Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, but stressed:
“You can’t play with one hand tied when others aren’t following the rules.”
While Republicans are consolidating power in Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, and aiming to do the same in Indiana and Kansas, Democrats are also pushing redistricting changes in New York, Virginia, and Illinois. Newsom said: “They’re not messing around. They’re consolidating power.”
On climate issues, Newsom will attend COP30 in Brazil to “stand up for my kids and grandkids, for common sense, for our economic future.”
And about Trump? Newsom didn’t hold back:
“With Trump, it’s not about the rule of law. It’s the rule of Don. These are not normal times. The rules have changed, and we need to change with them.”
