President Donald Trump finally broke his silence after reports claimed First Lady Melania Trump “didn’t love” his decision to demolish the East Wing — the historic section of the White House that housed the First Lady’s office.
In an interview with Laura Ingraham on Fox News, Trump laughed off the rumors and said Melania has come around:
“She loved her little tiny office, but you know what? She’s very smart — and now she thinks it’s great.”
Three weeks ago, Trump ordered the East Wing flattened to make room for what he calls his “big, beautiful ballroom” — a massive new space that could cost up to $300 million, fully funded by private donors.
He defended the controversial move, claiming the old East Wing had been “renovated 20 times” and “looked like hell.”
“It had little tiny windows, out of common brick — it was a poor, sad sight,” Trump said. “I didn’t want to sacrifice a great ballroom for an okay ballroom.”
💬 But not everyone’s impressed.
Former First Ladies Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton blasted the demolition, calling it an insult to the role of the First Lady.
“To tear it down is to pretend it doesn’t matter,” Obama said. “It’s a reflection of how you think of that role.”
Trump hit back, saying even Obama “wouldn’t mind a new ballroom,” pointing out how the Obamas used tents on the South Lawn for large events.
The plan is to relocate East Wing offices into the new ballroom complex once construction is done.
Of course, there’s controversy: Trump reportedly bypassed historic preservation reviews, taking advantage of the fact that the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) was closed during the government shutdown.
👉 The move cleared the way for construction without oversight or public hearings.
For context:
- The modern East Wing was built by Franklin D. Roosevelt to conceal his WWII bunker and give Eleanor Roosevelt more office space.
- The first version of the East Wing dates all the way back to Teddy Roosevelt.
🇺🇸 Bottom line: Trump says Melania’s on board now… but historians, Democrats, and preservationists are NOT.
A “tiny office” traded for a $300 million ballroom — welcome to the new White House era. ✨
