A Neighbor’s Heart: Helping a Military Family Cherish Every Moment Before Deployment

This is my neighbor, Steve. He has no idea I took this photo from my window, but what he did for our family is something I’ll never forget.

When my husband was about to be deployed, one of the things weighing on my mind—perhaps more than I expected—was the yard. The grass. Who would take care of it while he was away? I could have gone outside and mowed it myself, but with everything else on my plate—raising our two daughters, keeping the house running, handling the endless little tasks of daily life—I just couldn’t.

We thought about hiring a lawn service, but even that would mean I’d have to oversee the work, make sure it got done properly, and hope it met our standards. I wanted to remove as much stress and worry as possible before my husband left. I wanted to focus on the time we had left together.

And that’s when Steve stepped in.

I sent him a text explaining the situation. I wasn’t sure he would say yes, but I asked anyway.

“Could you help cut our grass?” I wrote. “My husband will mow it today before he deploys tomorrow, but it would be amazing if you could take care of it and help maintain it while he’s away. We can pay you.”

His response came immediately: “No problem at all. I won’t accept any payment. I just want to help.”

Hearing that, my husband and I both let out a sigh of relief. In those moments, when your spouse is about to leave for deployment, any bit of worry lifted from your shoulders feels like a tremendous gift. Knowing that the grass would be taken care of while we focused on family was priceless.

About an hour later, my husband was in the backyard playing with our daughters. He was trying to soak up every last moment with them before he left the next day. He told the girls he could play a little longer, but he also had to step outside soon to mow the lawn.

Then we heard it—the sound of the mower.

I looked up. “Steve is mowing the grass!” my husband exclaimed. “Maybe he misunderstood. We didn’t need him until next week, after I leave.”

I stepped outside, a bit embarrassed. “Steve, we didn’t need you to start until next week. He was going to do it today before he leaves tomorrow.”

Steve simply looked at me and said, “I know. But I’m not the one leaving my family for deployment. He can spend time with them. I’ve got this.”

At that moment, tears welled up in my eyes. Not just tears of relief, but of gratitude, anxiety, worry, and overwhelming appreciation. I poured my emotions out to Steve, who probably thought I was overreacting over grass. But it wasn’t about the grass—it never was.

It was about the gift of time. The gift of allowing my husband to stay present with his daughters, to laugh, to play, and to make memories before leaving for months. Steve’s selfless act reminded us that sometimes the smallest gestures carry the largest meaning.

As I walked back inside, I couldn’t help but think of Mr. Rogers:

It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood,
A beautiful day for a neighbor.
So let’s make the most of this beautiful day,
Since we’re together, we might as well say,
Won’t you be my neighbor?

Yes, we did. And we were grateful to have a neighbor like Steve.
