Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has reportedly been inundating King Charles with calls which have sparked fears within Buckingham Palace that the former prince could “go rogue”, a source has claimed.
The monarch is said to be in the middle of a fine balancing act to prevent further damage being inflicted on the family, as concerns remain that Mr Mountbatten-Windsor could act recklessly should he feel “backed into a corner”.
The former Duke was stripped of his royal titles by the King due to his links with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
Mr Mountbatten-Windsor was also booted out of the Royal Lodge early, his residence of more than 20 years, by King Charles.
A source told US outlet Radar the former prince has embarked on “near-daily, almost pleading calls”.
The source claimed that the King “doesn’t feel he has the freedom to shut that door completely.”
“There’s a very real anxiety within the Palace about how Andrew might react if he were fully cut off, and that uncertainty is driving a lot of the King’s decisions right now,” the insider told the outlet.
“It’s not a relationship being maintained out of warmth – it’s far more strategic than that.”
The source added that King Charles is “being pressured” into keeping the “line open” with Andrew, over fears he could “go rogue” if he is isolated further.
“That possibility is something they simply can’t ignore,” the insider said.
“There’s a sense that King Charles has to manage him carefully. If he doesn’t offer at least some level of engagement, even just by taking a call here and there, there’s no predicting how Andrew might respond.
“But privately, he finds those interactions deeply unwelcome – he would much rather not have to deal with him at all.
