Sir Keir Starmer was ridiculed after he repeatedly insisted “there hasn’t been a rise” in fuel duty – even though Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced it will increase by 5p.
The Prime Minister insisted fuel duty had been frozen until September, as he was questioned in the Commons by Kemi Badenoch during PMQs. But the Tory leader pointed out that taxes on petrol were due to increase after September.
However, Sir Keir also hinted a U-turn may be coming, as he told MPs: “We will keep the situation under review in light of what’s happening in Iran.”
It comes amid concerns over the impact that the Middle East conflict will have on the cost of living in the UK.
