Prunella Scales’ heartbreaking health update from son just months before death

Fawlty Towers legend Prunella Scales has sadly died aged 93 after battling dementia. A statement released from her family read: “Our darling mother Prunella Scales died peacefully at home in London yesterday. She was 93. Although dementia forced her retirement from a remarkable acting career of nearly 70 years, she continued to live at home. She was watching Fawlty Towers the day before she died.

“Pru was married to Timothy West for 61 years. He died in November 2024. She is survived by two sons and one stepdaughter, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. We would like to thank all those who gave Pru such wonderful care at the end of her life: her last days were comfortable, contented and surrounded by love.”

Shortly before his father Timothy’s death in Novemeber 2024, Samuel West, known for his role in All Creatures Great and Small, gave an update on Prunella’s health amid her health battle.

Prunella had been battling vascular dementia since 2014. When questioned about his mother’s health, Samuel revealed Prunella’s new “philosophy” following a recent cruise trip. Speaking about his parents, he informed viewers: “My mother went on a cruise the other day, I’m not sure if she knew where she was but she enjoyed getting there.

She said: ‘I don’t always know where I’m going but I enjoy getting there'” and I thought if that is her philosophy, that might have to be mine as well.” Despite being 92, Prunella continues to remain active in her career. In a conversation with The Times, she candidly discussed the impact of ageing on her memory and daily life. She elaborated: “As one gets older, one’s memory and living from minute to minute changes, doesn’t it? You get less efficient. My memory is less good.

I mean, I do forget things and that’s age, the same as everybody else.”

Despite her health challenges, Prunella Scales remains resolute in her determination to continue working in television and theatre.

Her late husband Timothy West, renowned for his roles in Coronation Street, Eastenders, and the sitcom Not Going Out, also remained professionally active until his passing.

Prunella Scales and Timothy West shared a marriage of 61 years and have two sons, Samuel, 58, and Joseph, as well as a step-daughter, Juliet, from Timothy’s previous marriage. In an interview conducted in 2023, Prunella expressed gratitude towards her husband for ‘sticking by (me) for so long’.

Timothy passed away ‘peacefully in his sleep’ whilst ‘surrounded by family’ on Tuesday, November 12.
