Kevin Federline is opening up about the “bizarre” night that led his ex-wife, Britney Spears, to shave her head in 2007 — a moment that shocked the world and marked the beginning of one of the most difficult chapters in her life.
In his upcoming memoir, You Thought You Knew, the former backup dancer claims that Britney showed up outside his house shortly after checking herself out of rehab.
“She showed up at the gate, ringing the bell and shouting a bunch of things that didn’t make sense,” Federline, 47, recalls in an excerpt obtained by E! News.
“The only words that came through clearly were: LET. ME. IN. Over and over again.”
According to him, Britney began climbing the front gate while he stayed inside with their two young sons, Sean Preston (then 2) and Jayden James (then 1). Security eventually turned her away because, Federline says, “she was in no condition to be around the kids.”
Not long after being denied entry, Britney drove to a nearby salon where, after a stylist refused to shave her head, she grabbed the clippers herself and did it.
“When the stunned stylist turned her down, Britney took matters into her own hands,” Federline writes. “She grabbed an electric clipper and shaved her own head.”
That same night came the now-infamous “umbrella incident,” when Spears, wearing a gray hoodie and sporting her freshly shaved head, swung an umbrella at paparazzi outside a gas station. Those images — of her wild-eyed and furious — spread worldwide in minutes.
Britney’s perspective
The pop superstar, now 43, has previously shared her side of the story in her 2023 memoir, The Woman In Me.
“I’d been eyeballed so much growing up,” she wrote. “I’d been looked up and down, had people telling me what they thought of my body since I was a teenager. Shaving my head and acting out were my ways of pushing back.”
At the time, Spears was in the middle of a public divorce from Federline after just two years of marriage, suffering from postpartum depression, and facing intense media pressure. A year later, in 2008, she was placed under a strict conservatorship controlled by her father, Jamie Spears, which lasted until 2021.
“I was made to understand that those days were now over,” she said in her memoir. “I had to grow my hair out and get back into shape. I had to go to bed early and take whatever medication they told me to take.”
Britney slams Kevin’s memoir
As Federline’s memoir is set to release on October 21, Spears and her team have criticized the book’s content and timing.
A spokesperson for the singer told Page Six:
“With news from Kevin’s book breaking, once again he and others are profiting off her, and sadly it comes after child support has ended with Kevin. All she cares about are her kids, Sean Preston and Jayden James, and their well-being during this sensationalism.”
Britney herself posted a message on Instagram:
“The constant gaslighting from my ex-husband is extremely hurtful and exhausting.”
She also shared her pain over her strained relationship with her sons, claiming that one of them had only seen her for 45 minutes in the past year, and the other just four times in the last five years.
“I have always pleaded and screamed to have a life with my boys,” she wrote.
“Relationships with teenage boys are complex. I have felt demoralized by this situation and have almost begged for them to be a part of my life.”
She added bitterly:
“Trust me, those white lies in that book — they’re going straight to the bank, and I’m the only one who genuinely gets hurt here.”
This renewed media storm comes nearly two decades after Britney’s infamous 2007 breakdown, reminding the public how one private night of personal crisis became a cultural spectacle — and how its impact still lingers for everyone involved.
