When federal food aid stopped this month, thousands of military families were left wondering how they’d feed their kids.
That’s when Army Emergency Relief (AER) stepped in.
Retired Sgt. Maj. of the Army Tony Grinston announced that AER will now cover missed SNAP and WIC payments — as grants, not loans — for soldiers and their families hit by the shutdown.
“We got you,” Grinston said in a video that quickly went viral among troops online.
The move comes as millions of Americans lose access to federal food assistance due to the funding lapse. Many junior enlisted soldiers and young military families were among those most at risk.
While courts just ordered the government to release $5 billion in emergency SNAP funds, payments could still take weeks or months to resume — leaving groups like AER to fill the gap in the meantime.
