“Willie Geist, Dylan Dreyer, Sheinelle Jones, and Carson Daly were all smiles as a once-in-a-lifetime live proposal took the Today Plaza by storm!”

Today Show Hosts Celebrate Surprise Live Proposal on the Plaza

Viewers of The Today Show were left thrilled as hosts Willie Geist, Dylan Dreyer, Sheinelle Jones, and Carson Daly paused their usual programming for an unforgettable live moment.Willie Geist, Dylan Dreyer, Sheinelle Jones, and Carson Daly hosting Today show

During Friday’s (October 17) episode, the show returned from a commercial break to what Willie Geist called “very exciting breaking news.” Filling in for Craig Melvin, Geist announced from the news desk, “Right guys, we just had a proposal outside on our plaza.” The cameras quickly cut to the plaza, where a crowd cheered as the happy couple shared the special moment.

Sheinelle Jones introduced the couple as Rachel and Luke from Chicago, who met ten years ago in college. “She thought they were in town to visit friends, but Luke had other plans,” she shared. The anchors handed the couple a microphone for a live chat, and Sheinelle noted that Luke had attended Northwestern University, where she also studied, which made the moment even more touching.

Luke explained that Rachel is “the biggest fan of the Today Show” and that the proposal had been carefully planned. Carson Daly teased, “Rachel, you know we come out at 8:30am, why didn’t you wait for us?” to which she joked back, “I’m waiting for you, Carson. I need a picture.” Sheinelle suggested Carson could officiate weddings, and he playfully confirmed he’s legally ordained in Oklahoma, citing the example of Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani.

Later in the show, the anchors made Rachel’s dream come true by heading to the plaza to meet the soon-to-be newlyweds in person.Rachel and Luke

This isn’t the first time Today has celebrated love live on air. In 2022, the show hosted a Las Vegas-themed wedding officiated by Willie Geist, dressed as Elvis Presley, for Eleanor Molvey and McKay Blanchard. The couple exchanged vows in front of fans and the anchors, with Jenna Bush Hager handing over the rings. Footage of that unforgettable event was later shared on Instagram with the caption: “What’s Las Vegas without a Vegas-style wedding? Cheers to the newlyweds!”

With their history of hosting proposals and weddings, the Today Show once again proved they know how to make love live on air — and give viewers a moment they won’t forget.
