Coronation Street star Tony Maudsley has ‘confirmed’ the funny truth behind his latest scene in the long-running show alongside his on-screen partner, Amy Robbins.
Those who follow the ITV soap best know the actor for playing George Shuttleworth, having made his debut on the cobbles back in 2020. Meanwhile, Amy recently reprised the role of Christina Boyd, returning late last year after being double-crossed by her daughter, Daisy Midgeley.
Speaking about her return to Corrie back in September, Amy told the Metro at the time: “This is my third or fourth return. My character, Christina, behaved so abominably the first time that I just couldn’t see any way she’d come back. When they phoned me to ask me back again it was the happiest day. I went ‘woo-hoo!’ I love it so much.”
Her return coincided with the exit of Eileen Grimshaw, George’s ex,and it wasn’t long before a romance was sparked between the undertaker and a usually scheming Christina. It didn’t take fans long to fall in love with the pairing, and they’re often seen as a highlight of the episodes they’re in.
That certainly didn’t change on Monday (May 18) night, as the latest episode of Corrie aired and saw the investigation into the recent murder of Theo Silverton continue.
It’s been weeks since the abuser was revealed as the victim of a murder, which was revealed to rock the cobbles back in February. An episode of the ITV soap featuring a flashforward confirmed that a shocking crime would occur on the cobbles, with Betsy Swain making the deadly discovery.
It was confirmed that she would find the murder victim on the night of her mum, Lisa Swain’s, wedding to Carla Connor, and it would either be Theo, Carl Webster, Jodie Ramsey, Megan Walsh or Maggie Driscoll, whose lifeless body she would stumble across as she continued the wedding celebrations.
While Lisa and Carla’s wedding took place on April 23, it wasn’t until a week later, on May 1, after an episode of the soap was dedicated to each possible victim, that a horrified Betsy was seen discovering Theo dead, with the abuser’s 13-month reign of terror, during which he made the life of his partner, Todd Grimshaw, hell, coming to a dramatic end.
Theo’s murder has now left Todd and his loved ones, George, Christina, and Summer Spellman, among the possible murder suspects, alongside Gary Windass and Theo’s ex-wife, Danielle Silverton, who could also be guilty of Theo’s demise as DS Lisa Connor-Swain and DC Kit Green’s investigation gathers pace.
During the first episode of Corrie this week, it was Summer who was in the Weatherfield detectives’ firing line. As George tidied up at No.11, he accidentally knocked over Summer’s bag. Picking up the contents, George found Summer’s journal, and while Christina told him not to pry, he was left horrified to see some of Summer’s notes, as she described putting a gun to Theo’s head.
Curiosity then got the cat, as George and Christina were soon seen settling down on the sofa to read Summer’s dark thoughts, all with a pick n mix in hand. But they were soon startled by Summer’s sudden return, who was furious to find them reading through her journal, before storming out.
Following the episode, Tony took to Instagram to share a photo of himself and Amy during the scene and revealed a bit of behind-the-scenes info that fans quickly lapped up. “I can confirm that me and @amylouiserobbins_ got through TWO full bags of Jelly Babies during the filming of this scene,” he wrote, before Amy replied: “I can confirm this. Never going to be able to look a jelly baby in the eye again.”
Their Corrie co-star, Catherine Tyldesley, was seen responding to the post, commenting: “I could watch you two all day,” before adding: “Ps I honestly think you guys need your own detective spin off.” And fans also saw the funny side.
