Strangers Raise $1.7 Million For 88-Year-Old Veteran So He Can Finally Retire From His Supermarket Job

$1.6 million raised for 88-year-old man working at grocery store

After nearly a decade of working again following the loss of both his wife and his pension, 88-year-old veteran Ed Bambas is finally getting the chance to rest — thanks to the kindness of strangers who raised $1.7 million for him.

Bambas’ story first caught the attention of Australian social media creator Sam Weidenhofer, who learned about the elderly veteran through a comment left on one of his videos, ABC News reported.

Having originally retired from General Motors in 1999, Bambas was forced back into the workforce nearly 10 years ago. His wife had fallen ill for a long period, and after she passed, the company cut his pension — leaving him with mounting medical bills from her treatment and not enough income to keep his home.

Today, Ed works at a Meijer supermarket in Brighton, Michigan. And despite his sudden internet fame, he remains humble and almost bewildered by it all.

“It came out of the clear blue — I really truly mean that,” he told WXYZ.
He also confessed he doesn’t even use social media: “I don’t own one of those fancy cellphones. I still have a flip phone just to talk to people.”

Bambas explained that although he owned his home, GM’s 2012 bankruptcy wiped out his pension. Taking care of his late wife Joan — both before and after her passing in 2018 — left him with significant debt. Still, he kept working without complaint.
“It wasn’t hard for me to do it because I knew I had to,” he said. “God gave me a good enough body to stand there eight, eight and a half hours a day.”

Weidenhofer told reporters that seeing Ed’s situation broke his heart. “No 88-year-old in America should work because they need to,” he said. He teamed up with Detroit influencer Mike McKinstry to find Ed in person.

“We walked around Meijer for about two hours looking for this friendly, jolly older man,” McKinstry recalled. “We ran into Ed at the checkout and knew instantly it was him.”

The two influencers filmed a video with him that quickly went viral — and soon launched a fundraiser to help him retire with dignity.

What they didn’t expect was how the entire internet would rally behind Ed. The GoFundMe campaign has now soared to $1.7 million — a number Ed himself still doesn’t know about yet, according to WXYZ.

The fundraiser reads:
“Despite everything, Ed shows up every day with quiet dignity, strength, and perseverance. His story is a stark reminder that too many seniors, especially veterans, face incredible challenges just to survive.”

And through it all, Ed continues to hold on to the memory of his beloved wife.
“I think my wife sits on my shoulder and helps me do the right thing,” he said. “I try to go to her gravesite every day and say hi… It helps me get through my day.”
