Prince William has carried the private pain of knowing how deeply his mother, Princess Diana, was deceived — and now, decades later, he is determined to uncover the full truth.

Andy Webb, author of Dianarama, told Fox News Digital, “William has a wound that will not heal. He needs to know what really happened 30 years ago. The impact on him must have been absolutely traumatic. He’s decided the time has come to find out.”

In November 1995, a 34-year-old Diana gave a secret interview to journalist Martin Bashir for the BBC’s Panorama. Already separated from Prince Charles, she revealed that her marriage had collapsed because Charles remained in love with Camilla Parker Bowles. Diana also spoke about her struggles with bulimia and self-harm — shocking millions worldwide. But she didn’t know she had been manipulated into the interview, a move her loved ones believe set off a chain of events that ultimately led to her death.

Investigative journalist Webb has spent 20 years exposing what he calls a “network cover-up.” Bashir reportedly used forged documents, including fake bank statements, to convince Diana to participate. He claimed William’s watch was a listening device, alleged palace staff were spying on her, and even suggested Charles wanted her dead to marry the boys’ nanny, Tiggy Legge-Bourke.

“These lies made Diana distrust everyone around her, including trusted aides and even her longtime chauffeur,” Webb explained. “Eighteen months later, she had a completely new circle of people — not the people you want guarding your security.”Prince Charles, Princess Diana, and baby Prince William at home in Kensington Palace.

The fallout was devastating. The Queen ordered a formal divorce, Diana lost many royal privileges, and she grew increasingly isolated. Two years later, she died tragically in a Paris car crash while being pursued by paparazzi.

Webb emphasizes that Diana’s “paranoia” was fueled by manipulation and fear, not imagination. “Martin Bashir knew she was already suspicious about being watched. He exploited that fear with forged documents and convincing lies,” Webb said.

William, who was 13 at the time, has carried the emotional weight ever since. “What teenager wants to see their mother on TV, being asked intimate questions and publicly criticizing their father?” Webb said.

The BBC eventually faced an independent inquiry led by Lord Dyson. The 2021 report confirmed Bashir had fabricated documents and criticized the BBC for covering up the scandal. William described the interview’s consequences as deeply painful, stating, “The BBC’s failures contributed significantly to her fear, paranoia, and isolation.” Prince Harry also noted that the culture of exploitation and unethical practices “ultimately took her life.”

Webb concluded, “William does not want this interview shown again. He calls it illegitimate. Diana gave it under terror and fear — not freely or safely.”

For decades, the shadow of that infamous interview has haunted the royal family — and now, Prince William is determined to finally uncover the truth for himself.
