Nearly a month after the tragedy that sent shockwaves through Hollywood, Nick Reiner, the son of director Rob Reiner, is reportedly no longer under suicide watch, according to People.
The suicide-prevention smock he had previously been required to wear has been removed. The garment drew attention when Nick made his first court appearance on December 17, shortly after he was arrested on two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner.
Although he is no longer under direct suicide monitoring, the 32-year-old is still being held in solitary confinement at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles. He remains in High Observation Housing (HOH) and will continue to be closely monitored until a judge or court determines otherwise. His arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday.
Nick’s attorney has not yet commented publicly.
Siblings leaning on each other in the aftermath
While Nick remains behind bars, his siblings — Jake, 34, and Romy, 28 — are said to be relying on each other at the family’s beach house in California. Page Six recently published photos of the two walking quietly along the shoreline, collecting rocks — a rare moment of calm in the middle of overwhelming grief.
Romy was reportedly the person who discovered their parents’ bodies in the Brentwood home after they had been fatally stabbed.
The final days before the murders
Before his arrest, Nick was captured on camera wandering around Los Angeles and reportedly left behind a blood-stained hotel room. He had long struggled with drug addiction, was reportedly diagnosed with schizophrenia, and had his medication changed just weeks before the murders — a period when family and friends say his behavior became “alarming.”
The night before the bodies were found, Nick attended Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party with his parents. At a later memorial service, a friend shared that Rob had confided he was “afraid of [his] son” and feared Nick might “hurt” him.
A shattered family — and a heartbreaking farewell
After the horrific deaths of Rob and Michele, Jake and Romy released a deeply emotional statement:
“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
For now, the motive remains unclear. All eyes are on the upcoming court proceedings, where Nick will formally face the charges against him.
