Melissa Gilbert has made an emotional plea to the court, urging a judge to protect her husband, actor and director Timothy Busfield, as he remains jailed in New Mexico on child sex abuse charges.
In a deeply personal letter submitted Friday and obtained by People, the Little House on the Prairie star described Busfield — her husband since 2013 — as an “extraordinary man” and begged authorities to keep him safe while in custody.
“I only want this extraordinary man safe and whole,” Gilbert wrote. “Please, please, take care of my sweet husband. As he is my protector, I am his — but I cannot protect him now. And that, more than anything else, is what is truly breaking my heart.”
Gilbert’s letter was one of 75 character references submitted to the court by friends, family members, and former co-stars rallying behind the embattled West Wing and Field of Dreams actor.
Busfield, 68, has denied all allegations but surrendered to New Mexico authorities on January 13, more than a week after charges were filed.
In her letter, Gilbert painted an almost reverential portrait of her husband.
“The reality is that Tim Busfield is my love, my rock, my partner in business and life,” she wrote. “His joy, humor and quick wit bring sparkle to my life. Tim is, quite simply, the beating heart of our wild and wonderful extended family.”
She went further, claiming to know Busfield more intimately than anyone else in the world — and vouching unequivocally for his character.
“Tim has the strongest moral compass of any human I have ever known,” Gilbert said. “He has dedicated his spiritual self to being of service to others. He starts every day with kindness and compassion.”
Gilbert also emphasized Busfield’s reputation in Hollywood, saying she is constantly approached by people who tell her he is “their favorite director ever.”
“People say that to me in restaurants, on red carpets and even in grocery stores,” she wrote. “His former students tell me he was their favorite teacher ever. He is my favorite.”
The former SAG president (2001–2005) also described Busfield’s role as a stepfather to her son Michael, now 30, whom she shares with ex-husband Bruce Boxleitner.
“Michael was a full-blown, angst-ridden teenager when Tim came into our lives,” Gilbert wrote. “Tim nurtured him, guided him, loved him, and cared for him — both physically and spiritually. I will never be able to express the depth of gratitude I have for this wonderful human.”
Gilbert admitted the letter was unlike anything she had ever written — torn between logic and overwhelming emotion.
“I began this letter with logic, but now the feelings have taken over,” she confessed. “I can’t help it. I only want this extraordinary man safe and whole.”
Meanwhile, Busfield’s legal team sharply criticized prosecutors, opposing the state’s request for pre-trial detention and arguing there is no credible evidence he poses a danger.
“The State’s attempt to transform responsible self-surrender into aggravating conduct only underscores the absence of genuine evidence,” his attorneys wrote in a filing obtained by Deadline.
“The Motion asks the Court to imprison a man based on a story that has already collapsed under independent scrutiny.”
Busfield remains in custody as the case continues — and as his wife’s public plea raises new questions about loyalty, belief, and what comes next.
