The Kansas City Chiefs opened OTA practices to the media this week, and one thing quickly became clear:
Patrick Mahomes is making steady progress.
Just over five months removed from ACL and LCL surgery, the franchise quarterback was back on the field delivering passes with the accuracy and confidence Chiefs fans have come to expect.
While Mahomes was limited during certain portions of practice, his movement looked encouraging as he continues working toward his goal of returning for Week 1.
But Mahomes wasn’t the only player generating excitement.
Xavier Worthy Continues Building Momentum
One of the biggest storylines from practice was the performance of Xavier Worthy.
The second-year receiver looked explosive throughout red-zone drills and hauled in two touchdown catches from Mahomes.
After battling injuries during portions of his rookie season, Worthy appears healthier and more comfortable within Kansas City’s offense.
The chemistry between him and Mahomes continues to grow.
If that trend continues into training camp, Worthy could become one of the most dangerous weapons in the Chiefs’ offense this season.
Jalen Royals Turns Heads
Another young receiver making noise was rookie Jalen Royals.
Royals delivered one of the best catches of the day, drawing visible excitement from Mahomes himself.
The rookie continues to impress coaches and teammates with his athleticism and playmaking ability.
While it’s still early, Royals is quickly becoming a name worth monitoring as training camp approaches.
A Different Energy Around The Offense
The return of Eric Bieniemy has brought noticeable energy back to the offensive side of the ball.
Multiple observers noted the intensity and enthusiasm throughout practice.
Bieniemy was actively coaching, celebrating big plays, and demanding attention to detail.
Combined with new position coaches Chad O’Shea and DeMarco Murray, the Chiefs appear focused on creating a more explosive and disciplined offense heading into 2026.
Young Talent Emerging Everywhere
Several younger players also stood out throughout practice.
Andrew Armstrong scored multiple touchdowns.
Tanner McCalister impressed defensively.
Rookies Mansoor Delane and Jadon Canady both recorded pass breakups.
Meanwhile, offensive tackle Esa Pole earned praise for his offseason development and work ethic.
The competition for roster spots is already heating up.
The Biggest Takeaway
The most encouraging sight wasn’t necessarily a touchdown or a highlight catch.
It was seeing Patrick Mahomes back on the field looking comfortable, confident, and fully engaged with his teammates.
The road back from a major knee injury remains ongoing.
But every OTA practice makes it feel a little more realistic that No. 15 will be ready when Kansas City needs him most.
And if players like Xavier Worthy and Jalen Royals continue developing, the Chiefs offense may become even more dangerous than many expect.
