King Charles visited Cambridge Central Mosque, recognised as Europe’s first Eco-Mosque and widely regarded as one of the country’s most significant modern religious buildings.
The mosque has earned distinction for its outstanding architectural design, its commitment to environmental leadership, and its dual function as both a place of worship and a hub for community activity.
During the visit, the King met with architects, faith leaders, young people, volunteers and members of the local community across several areas of the building, from its tranquil gardens through to the main prayer hall.
The King began his tour in the mosque’s garden, where he was joined by the lead architect and the team responsible for the garden’s design.
Conceived as a serene transitional space, the garden guides visitors from the bustle of the surrounding city towards the sacred interior of the building.
Moving inside, His Majesty was introduced to the brickwork artist behind one of the mosque’s most distinctive features.
The artist explained how verses from the Qur’an have been intricately woven into the brickwork throughout the main atrium, creating a striking fusion of craftsmanship and spiritual expression that sets the building apart from conventional mosque design.
While in the atrium, the King also explored the mosque’s environmental credentials and its broader sustainability strategy.
Marks Barfield Architects designed the building with the express aim of embodying Islamic principles of environmental stewardship, ensuring that its green strategy was embedded in the architecture from the outset rather than retrofitted.
The approach blends passive design techniques with energy-efficient building systems and renewable energy generation, resulting in notably low operational energy demand and a substantial reduction in carbon emissions.
This integration of faith-inspired values with cutting-edge sustainable design has cemented the mosque’s reputation as a pioneering model for environmentally responsible places of worship across Europe.
In the prayer hall, Charles joined faith leaders, staff and community members to learn about the mosque’s extensive outreach work.
The building serves as an approved provider of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, reflecting its particular focus on engaging young people through a varied programme of activities.
Beyond youth work, the mosque runs food distribution schemes, litter-picking campaigns and educational programmes tackling local social issues.
It has also revitalised the Romsey area by offering free public tours and welcoming schools, charities and community groups.
Partnerships with the University of Cambridge and the NHS underpin its interfaith and health and wellbeing initiatives.
