The Kansas City Chiefs offseason rebuild has begun, with wide receivers coach Connor Embree fired.
The Chiefs are set for a major overhaul after a dreadful 2025 campaign where they failed to reach the playoffs. And while head coach Andy Reid is safe in his job, the coaching staff around him is set to be shaken up.
The first move is to shoiw Embree the door after three seasons as wide receiver coach and seven overall with the organization.
He joined as a defensive assistant and then became offensive quality control coach before taking over the wide receiver role in 2022.
The Chiefs offense, packed with talent, were plagued with dropped passes throughout the 2025 campaign, something Embree tired to explain back in December.
‘The drops I feel like this year have been with some stuff where it’s like, they’re trying to get the ball and make a move before they catch it,’ Embree said at a press conference.

‘And it’s usually with players that, that’s their strength, where they catch the ball, get up the field. And it’s just happened this year where some of those, they didn’t look it all the way in before they started running.’
The Chiefs are widely expected to have a new offensive coordinator by the time the 2026 campaign rolls around.
Matt Nagy is set to interview for several head coaching positions and has been linked most strongly with the Tennessee Titans.
And it has been reported that even if he doesn’t land a head coaching role, he will depart the Chiefs and become an OC where he has greater responsibility.
There is also potential that highly-rated defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo departs, too. He is also set to interview with the Titans over the HC role.
Travis Kelce also has a big decision to make over his future. The legendary tight end, 36, was one of the bright spots for the Chiefs in 2025 but his contract has expired and he is stepping back to consider his options.
Speaking Wednesday on his New Heights podcast, Kelce sounded cautiously optimistic about his future.
‘There’s a lot of love for the game still, and I don’t think I’ll ever lose that,’ he said.

‘It’s a tough thing to navigate but at the same time I think if my body can heal up and rest and I can feel confident that I can go out there and give it another 18, 20, 21-week run, I think I would do it in a heartbeat.
‘I think right now it’s just finding that answer and see how the body feels after all this settles down.’
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is also on the comeback trail after tearing his ACL in the December loss to Los Angeles Chargers that curtailed their playoff hopes.
