The cause of death of Ethan Browne — son of legendary singer-songwriter Jackson Browne — has been revealed nearly two months after his sudden passing.
Ethan, an actor and model, died on Nov. 25, 2025, at the age of 52 after being found unresponsive in his home. On Tuesday, Jan. 13, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed that he died from the combined effects of fentanyl, methamphetamine and lidocaine. His death was ruled accidental.
Jackson Browne, 77, confirmed the heartbreaking news the day after Ethan’s death with a statement shared on Facebook.
“It is with deep sorrow that we share that on the morning of November 25, 2025, Ethan Browne, the son of Jackson Browne and Phyllis Major, was found unresponsive in his home and has passed away,” the statement read. “We ask for privacy and respect for the family during this difficult time.”
A Childhood Marked by Loss
Ethan was just a toddler when his mother, Phyllis Major — who married Browne in 1975 — died by suicide, a tragedy that deeply shaped the family.
In a 1974 Rolling Stone interview, conducted shortly after a concert, a young Jackson Browne spoke tenderly about fatherhood while playing with his infant son backstage.
“I love it when he laughs,” Browne said at the time. “His little voice. His little throat.”
The musician also admitted that becoming a father changed him profoundly.
“I wanted a baby ’cause I wanted to be a baby,” he said. “There’s something pure about it.”
Ethan even appeared alongside his father on the cover of Rolling Stone as a newborn.
Finding His Own Path in Hollywood
As an adult, Ethan carved out his own creative identity. He became a successful model, appearing in campaigns for designers including Isaac Mizrahi, according to producer Mark Ronson’s memoir Night People.
Ronson described Ethan as “the real deal,” praising his angular features and soulful gaze — qualities he said reflected both of Ethan’s parents.
“He had his mother’s sharp cheekbones,” Ronson wrote, “and his father’s soulful eyes.”
Ethan also founded Spinside Records, an imprint under Jackson Browne’s independent label Inside Recordings, and appeared on the big screen in the 2004 film Raising Helen, starring alongside Kate Hudson.
A Devoted Father and Son
In a 2022 interview with Tru Rock Revival, Jackson Browne spoke proudly about the man his son had become.
“Ethan is a great father. He’s a great son, a great man,” he said. “Seeing him with his kids makes me very proud. It makes me feel I’ve done something really right in my life.”
Jackson Browne is also father to another son, Ryan, 43, whom he shares with ex-wife Lynne Sweeney.
Ethan Browne is remembered not only as the son of a rock icon, but as a creative force, devoted father and deeply loved member of his family — gone far too soon.
