New York City Councilmember Julie Menin has secured enough votes to become the city’s next council speaker — a victory welcomed by many residents concerned about the radical progressive agenda emerging under Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.
For many New Yorkers, the appeal of sweeping social change has its limits. Instead, the city’s residents are seeking a steadying hand, someone who can counter policies that have already contributed to higher costs of living, declining public safety, overcrowded subways, underperforming schools, and fragmented communities.
Menin, with experience as a City Council candidate, Manhattan District Attorney candidate, and Community Education Council president, has long engaged with New Yorkers about their real concerns. Safety, economic stability, and quality education remain top priorities.
Recent incidents underscore the urgency. Just last week, an NYU student was assaulted on Sixth Avenue, a Soho boutique lost $1 million in merchandise to a robbery, and a Molotov cocktail was thrown into a West Village store. These events highlight the critical need to address public safety, including reviewing bail reform, maintaining the NYPD gang database, and rejecting proposals like the Department of Community Safety.
As council speaker, Menin has the platform to advocate forcefully for repealing laws that allow repeat offenders back onto the streets, to rally her colleagues in support of the gang database, and to push back against policies that undermine policing and public security.
Transportation and environmental policies also require scrutiny. Critics of Mamdani’s initiatives warn that congestion pricing disproportionately taxes working-class New Yorkers without delivering meaningful improvements in air quality or subway reliability.
Education policy is another area where moderation is critical. Mamdani’s transition team includes officials favoring equity-focused reforms over academic excellence, threatening gifted programs, specialized high school entrance exams, and merit-based advancement. As a parent of public school graduates and current students, Menin can champion policies that reward hard work and protect opportunities for bright students from all backgrounds.
Menin must also navigate sensitive social issues, including gender policy in schools. She co-signed a letter in May 2024 criticizing public-school parents seeking review of the 2019 gender guidelines, which allow boys to participate in girls’ sports and access girls’ locker rooms and bathrooms. Balancing inclusivity with fairness for female student-athletes will require careful, principled leadership.
Finally, Menin faces the challenge of confronting antisemitism and extremist influences within city politics. Incidents such as restricted access to synagogues and silencing of Holocaust survivors in schools demonstrate the need for clear, principled statements defending Jewish students and communities.
The speakership offers Menin an opportunity to steer the council toward sensible, pragmatic policies that serve the majority of New Yorkers, rather than catering to extremes. Moderation is not just a label; it is a commitment to policies that deliver results, safeguard communities, and uphold the city’s core values.
