The West Wing star, 68, stands accused of inappropriately touching twin boys on the set of TV series The Cleaning Lady between 2022 and 2024. Busfield has vehemently denied all allegations but remains behind bars without bond following a court appearance earlier this week.Patricia Wettig - Actress

Late Tuesday, his legal team filed a motion challenging the decision to hold him in custody, arguing prosecutors have failed to present any evidence that Busfield poses a danger to the community if released on bail.

Attached to the filing were a series of character references from Hollywood colleagues and longtime friends, all vouching for the actor’s integrity and professionalism.

Among those offering support were actor-director Peter Horton and actors Patricia Wettig and Mackenzie Astin — all of whom have worked closely with Busfield during his decades-long career.

Horton, who starred alongside Busfield on Thirtysomething, described him as “a good man” and a devoted father.Peter Horton — The Movie Database (TMDB)

“Tim is not only a great actor and a really good director — more than all of that, Tim is a good man,” Horton wrote. “I offer this perspective not only as a friend and fellow artist, but as a fellow parent who understands the importance of having a good dad.”

Wettig, who played Busfield’s wife on Thirtysomething, echoed those sentiments, recalling intimate scenes they shared on screen and praising his conduct throughout.

“He was always humble, respectful and caring,” she said, adding that Busfield consistently made sure children on set “felt comfortable and safe.”

Astin credited Busfield with helping revive his acting career after a battle with alcoholism in the early 2000s, saying the actor gave him work at a pivotal moment in his recovery.

“That job made a significant impact on my life,” Astin wrote. “It reminded me that I was capable, that the sober life I had chosen could be rewarded.”

Busfield’s wife, actress Melissa Gilbert, also appealed directly to the judge, calling her husband “compassionate and honorable” and asking the court to protect him.

The defense filing included unusually personal details about Busfield’s private life, noting that he and Gilbert maintain a “satisfying” marriage and enjoy affection more than sex. The document also stated that Busfield occasionally masturbates while showering, with the last instance occurring six months ago — information offered by attorneys in an apparent effort to counter claims of predatory behavior.Mackenzie Astin, người xuất hiện trong ảnh, đã hợp tác với Busfield trong hai tập phim của First Years vào đầu những năm 2000 và cũng bày tỏ sự ủng hộ đối với ngôi sao đang gặp khó khăn này.

Busfield’s lawyers further alleged the accusations surfaced only after the twins lost their roles on the show, suggesting a possible financial or retaliatory motive. They claimed both parents of the boys have a documented history of fraud.

The filing also pointed to an internal Warner Bros. investigation into the allegations — one prosecutors allegedly failed to mention — which reportedly found no evidence to support the claims against Busfield.

According to police records, one of the boys told a forensic interviewer that Busfield touched his “private areas” while he was lying on a bed on set, saying he was too afraid to report it because Busfield was the show’s director. The child has since been diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety.

His twin brother also alleged inappropriate contact but provided fewer details.

Busfield has publicly denied all accusations. In a video shared with TMZ, he said: “They’re all lies. I did not do anything to those little boys, and I’m going to fight this.”

“I know I’ll be exonerated,” he added. “This is all wrong.”

Busfield is due back in court on January 20, when a judge will decide whether he will remain in custody until trial.
