Gil Gerard, the actor who captured the hearts of fans worldwide as the titular space hero in Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 82, his wife announced.

“Early this morning, my soulmate Gil lost his courageous battle with a rare and aggressively fast-moving form of cancer,” Janet Gerard shared on Facebook. “From the moment we sensed something was wrong to this morning, only days had passed. Every moment with him was precious, but even a lifetime together would never have been enough. Hold close the people you love and cherish every single moment with them.”

Born in 1943, Gil Gerard became an icon of 1970s science fiction with his portrayal of the charming and daring NASA Captain William “Buck” Rogers. The character, first brought to life in a 1979 feature film, quickly transitioned to television later that year, when NBC launched the Buck Rogers series. The show ran for 32 episodes, captivating audiences with its blend of futuristic adventure, witty humor, and Gerard’s magnetic presence, until its cancellation in April 1981.

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century was itself inspired by Philip Francis Nowlan’s beloved comic strip, which first appeared in U.S. newspapers in 1929, capturing imaginations with tales of space exploration and heroism long before the modern sci-fi boom. Gerard’s portrayal of Buck Rogers brought a new level of charisma and relatability to the character, making him a cultural touchstone for generations of fans.BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTURY -- Season 2 -- Pictured: (l-r) Felix Silla as Twiki, Erin Gray as Colonel Wilma Deering, Gil Gerard as Captain William "Buck" Rogers, Wilfrid Hyde-White as Dr. Goodfellow (Photo by Herb Ball/NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via Getty Images via Getty Images)

Beyond his work on Buck Rogers, Gerard had a prolific career in film and television, appearing in a wide array of roles that showcased his versatility and dedication to his craft. Yet it was Buck Rogers that left an indelible mark on popular culture, a role that earned him lasting admiration and affection from fans around the world.

Gil Gerard’s passing is a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of life and the enduring power of stories that inspire us. As fans, we remember not only the hero he portrayed on screen but also the man behind the character—beloved, talented, and deeply cherished by those who knew him best.
