He’s still standin’ — even when the world went dark on one side.
Music legend Elton John, 78, has opened up about the terrifying battle that cost him the sight in his right eye — and the fierce hope that’s keeping him going.
Last year, while vacationing in the South of France, Elton contracted a severe eye infection that attacked both eyes… and ultimately took the vision in his right one completely.
“It’s been devastating,” he told Variety. “For 15 months, I couldn’t see anything — no TV, no reading, nothing.”
But the Rocket Man refuses to let the darkness win.
“There is hope,” Elton said. “I just have to be patient. One day, science will help me. And once they fix this one, I’ll be fine.”
Even as he battles limited vision in his remaining eye, he’s still preaching resilience:
“You can’t give up. You have to stay strong. You have to keep pushing that door open.”
And he’s not doing it alone.
Elton praised his husband David Furnish and their sons, Zachary (14) and Elijah (12), for keeping his spirits alive during the toughest stretch of his life.
Rock royalty has his back too — Paul McCartney checks in on FaceTime, Pete Townshend and Mick Jagger send love, and Keith Richards drops in with emails that literally make Elton’s day.
(Imagine Keith Richards sliding into your inbox with “Hello darling.” Iconic.)
Elton first revealed the condition in a heartbreaking Instagram post last year, telling fans he was healing — slowly — and praying for the return of vision in his remaining weakened eye.
Months later, he’s opening up about how this battle has reshaped his life at home… and why he refuses to lose his spark.
Because even now — with one eye gone and the other struggling — Elton John is still living the words he sang decades ago:
He’s still standing.
Better than he ever did.
