Creator Behind $1.7M Fundraiser for 88-Year-Old Veteran Says Today’s Reveal Will ‘Change His Life’

Who is Samuel Weidenhofer? All about Kindness influencer raising money for viral army veteran Ed Bambas - PRIMETIMER

Samuel Weidenhofer still feels like he’s living in a dream. In just one week, a chance encounter with an 88-year-old Michigan veteran turned into a global wave of kindness that no one saw coming.

The Australian creator introduced the world to Ed Bambas — a longtime Meijer cashier, former General Motors worker, and U.S. veteran — in a TikTok video that has now topped 10 million views.

Bambas retired from General Motors in 1999, but nearly a decade ago he returned to work after losing his wife to a long illness — right around the time his employer cut his pension. To stay afloat and pay off his debts, he kept working long shifts even into his late 80s.

And then one small comment on social media changed everything.

Weidenhofer’s video touched millions. He tells PEOPLE he’s been “blown away” by the kindness that followed. Within just a few days, people from around the world — fans, strangers, and everyone in between — came together to raise more than $1.7 million to help Bambas finally retire.

“It’s unbelievable. I’m so thankful,” Weidenhofer said during a Zoom call. “I never imagined the video would get this kind of support. It’s record-breaking… maybe it’s at 1.8 million now.”

Today, he finally delivered the life-changing news in person — revealing to Bambas just how many people had rallied behind him.
Because Bambas doesn’t own a phone or a computer, he had no idea how large the fundraiser had grown.

The moment was emotional, raw, and unforgettable.

On Instagram, Weidenhofer shared photos of Bambas receiving the check and wrote:
“1.77 MILLION — One of the biggest individual fundraisers in GoFundMe HISTORY. 🥹❤️ You’ve changed the life of an 88-year-old veteran. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. You didn’t just help Ed — you spread hope to the entire world.”

Weidenhofer says he wanted the reveal to be simple and heartfelt.
“My plan was just to walk up and say, ‘Hey Ed, how’ve you been? Did you ever use that money I gave you?’ — because that $400 is still in his pocket. He didn’t even think it was real,” he laughed.

Bambas carries nearly $300,000 in debt. With the unexpected surge in donations, Weidenhofer believes everything is about to change:
“This is going to give him peace of mind. He’ll finally be able to stop worrying.”

The most surprising part? Weidenhofer met Bambas completely by chance.
“I had no idea about his story. I didn’t know he lost his wife, didn’t know what he had been through,” he explained. “I just had a feeling we needed to go there. It shows that you never know what someone is carrying behind the scenes.”

To many, Bambas represents a struggle they know too well.
“I think Ed’s situation is something so many Americans can relate to.”

For Weidenhofer, the real magic isn’t the viral video — it’s witnessing what people can do when they come together.
“It’s so much bigger than a video now… Even GoFundMe told me they’ve never seen a single-person campaign blow up like this from one initial post.”

After a whirlwind week, he plans to rest — then keep going.
“To be honest, I just want to keep doing this on an even larger scale. My dream? Something real and meaningful… maybe even on Netflix someday.”
