KANSAS CITY, Mo. The Kansas City Chiefs have officially been eliminated from the 2025 playoffs. It is a stunning outcome for the fan base. Now, the organization appears to be shifting toward a tanking strategy aimed at securing a higher draft position in 2026.With Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid, Kansas City has rarely missed the postseason in recent years. Harsh reality has forced general manager Brett Veach to consider difficult choices. One clear motivation stands out. Targeting South Carolina cornerback Brandon Cisse, widely viewed as the top CB prospect in the 2026 draft.
At the moment, the Chiefs are projected to hold the No. 12 overall pick, though that could change over the final three games. Continued losses could push Kansas City into the top five to eight range. That jump would significantly improve their chances of landing Cisse, a true shutdown corner with elite man coverage ability who could pair perfectly with Trent McDuffie.
Why tanking could make sense for Kansas City
The secondary remains vulnerable opposite McDuffie, and that position could be reshaped through offseason moves. Cisse is viewed as a rare game changer who could anchor a rebuilt defensive backfield. With Mahomes dealing with injury uncertainty, even if the severity remains unclear, strengthening the defense and protecting the franchise quarterback have become top priorities.
Risks and controversy
Tanking is always controversial and often criticized for undermining competitive integrity. If the Chiefs appear to intentionally drop their remaining games against the Chargers, Broncos, and Raiders, backlash from fans and the league would be inevitable. From Veach’s perspective, however, this may represent a necessary step toward closure, ending a disappointing season and laying the foundation for a reset.
Outlook
If the Chiefs successfully position themselves in the top five to seven picks, they would hold a powerful asset to select Cisse or another elite talent. Chiefs Kingdom is divided. Some support sacrificing now for the future. Others argue that intentionally losing disrespects Mahomes and Reid.
Either way, the 2026 draft looms as a defining moment. Kansas City may be prepared to lose now in order to win later. Brandon Cisse could be the prize that makes the gamble worthwhile.
