Billy Joel just gave fans a moment they won’t forget.
The 76-year-old music icon surprised the crowd in Wellington, Florida, with his first live performance since announcing last year that he had been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a brain disorder that affects movement and cognitive function.
The town was celebrating its 30th anniversary on Friday with a lineup of bands, including The Turnstiles — named after Joel’s 1976 album. As the group wrapped up their set, they teased a mystery guest…and then out walked Billy Joel himself.
Wearing a winter coat and black baseball cap and using a cane, Joel was joined by wife Alexis Roderick and daughters Della, 10, and Remy, 8. He is also dad to Alexa Ray Joel, 40, from his marriage to Christie Brinkley.
Once at the piano, Joel launched straight into his 1989 classic “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” followed by a high-energy rendition of “Big Shot.” At one adorable moment, daughters Della and Remy danced around him as the crowd erupted.
“I wasn’t planning on working tonight,” Joel joked before playing, flashing his signature dry humor.
The surprise appearance comes eight months after he revealed his health diagnosis and canceled touring dates. Normal pressure hydrocephalus occurs when cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the skull and presses on the brain, potentially causing problems with balance, vision, memory, and mood. Joel previously shared that performing had worsened his symptoms, and doctors ordered him to stop touring during recovery.
“I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience,” he said at the time. “Thank you for understanding.”
In July, Joel reassured fans he was staying positive.
“I know a lot of people are worried about me, but I’m okay,” he told People. “What I have is something very few people know about — including me.”
He said he’s focusing on treatment and recovery, adding, “It was scary, but I’m okay. Don’t worry about me being deathly ill.”
His daughter Alexa later shared that her father has been remarkably resilient. She revealed he’s doing physical therapy three to five times a week and has even changed his diet — joking that she was shocked to see him order chicken instead of steak.
Friday night’s surprise performance felt like a victory lap — not just for a music legend, but for a fighter slowly stepping back into the spotlight.
