BBC Radio 1 has been met with uproar after it confirmed a sweeping overhaul of its presenter lineup.
Six hosts are departing the station as part of significant scheduling changes that were announced today.
Rickie Haywood-Williams and Melvin Odoom, who have fronted programmes at the station for seven years since arriving from Kiss FM in 2019, are among those leaving.
Dean McCullough, Nat O’Leary, James Cusack and Swarzy will also exit the broadcaster.
The station shared the news via Instagram, stating: “We thank them for their passion, creativity and dedication and wish them all the very best for whatever comes next.”
Mr Haywood-Williams and Mr Odoom initially presented the late-night slot from 9pm to 11pm before transitioning to the mid-morning Live Lounge programme in 2021.
The departing presenters are being replaced by a wave of social media personalities and content creators.
GK Barry, the podcaster behind Saving Grace and current Loose Women panellist, will host a series of programmes beginning on September 10 at 1pm for an initial six-week run.
“You’ll be hearing my favourite songs, we’ll be speaking with some really exciting guests and as always, in true GK Barry style, I promise a lot of humour, chaos and embarrassing stories along the way,” she said.
TikTok star Charley Marlowe, who narrated BBC Three’s I Kissed A Girl, takes over the Friday to Sunday slot alongside Vicky Hawkesworth.
Broadcasting duo Mylo and Rosie, formerly of West Yorkshire’s Pulse 1, will assume the weekday Early Breakfast programme previously hosted by Mr McCullough. Emil Franchi joins as the new Weekend Breakfast presenter, replacing Mr Cusack.
Following the announcement, several listeners took to X to share their views – and it’s safe to say plenty weren’t best pleased.
Reacting to a post from popular pop culture account @SuperTV247, one X user fumed: “Love and respect to everyone, but established broadcasters and DJ’s being ousted to make way for TikTokers and social media personalities ain’t it.”
“Love GK and Charley but axing actual Radio hosts and DJs for influencers is not the way to go,” a second hit out, while a third raged: “So they axed actual presenters for influencers, god this industry ain’t going to be easy to get into.”
Another echoed: “Majority social media influencers will never have the skill to be as good as their predecessors in whatever industry they’re stealing jobs in. And young people don’t even listen to the radio. So you have a bunch of influencers trying to appeal to older millennials, GNX & boomers.”
Meanwhile, a fifth hit out: “It’s ridiculous that qualified people in all media industries are getting replaced by tiktok influencers.”
And a sixth concurred: “They wonder why ratings are falling when they replace actual DJs with these reality influencers.”
There was some limited support for the move, however. One fan hit back at the negativity, saying: “GK will be incredible.”
Following their axe, Mr Haywood-Williams and Mr Odoom released a joint statement reflecting on their time at the broadcaster.
“It’s hard to believe it’s been seven years since we first stepped into the studio in 2019,” they said. “Presenting on the station has been an unforgettable experience, and we are incredibly grateful to the entire team and, most importantly, our brilliant listeners.”
The pair added: “From starting out on the late-night show to hosting the Live Lounge, we have made so many amazing memories that we’ll take with us. We are so proud of everything we’ve achieved here and couldn’t be more excited for the next chapter.”
Mr McCullough, who appeared on I’m a Celebrity in 2024, described his departure as “such a hard decision” following six years at the station. “It’s time for a change, I’m ready and very excited for the future,” he said.
Charlie Hedges, who arrived at Radio 1 alongside Mr Haywood-Williams and Mr Odoom in 2019, will continue at the station. She has been paired with Jeremiah Asiamah to front the iconic Live Lounge programme from Monday to Thursday.
Aled Haydn Jones, Head of BBC Radio 1, expressed his appreciation for the outgoing talent. “I’d like to say a huge thank you to Rickie and Melvin, who leave Radio 1 as true Live Lounge legends, and to Dean, whose journey from our Christmas Takeover to hosting his own show has been a joy to watch,” he said.
Mr Jones added: “I’d also like to thank Nat and James, who have each brought so much passion, creativity and dedication to Radio 1.
“We’re incredibly grateful for everything they’ve contributed to the station and wish them every success in whatever comes next.”
