Meghan Markle’s ‘summer invitation’ message sparks backlash after King Charles olive branch

The Duchess of Sussex distributed a newsletter to her followers on Friday evening, centring on the theme of “summer invitations”.

This came just hours after news broke that she and Prince Harry had received an offer to stay at one of the King’s private residences during their planned return to Britain next month.

The timing struck many observers as particularly notable, given the royal residence offer had only just been reported.

In her message to subscribers of her As Ever lifestyle brand, Meghan remarked that “summer invitations have a way of arriving all at once”, a phrase some viewed as a pointed coincidence.Meghan Markle

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to travel to the UK in July for a One Year To Go celebration marking the 2027 Invictus Games, which will be held in Birmingham.

The couple intends to bring their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, along for the visit.

The Sussexes have been offered accommodation at one of King Charles’s private properties during their stay, though GB News understands they have yet to respond to this invitation.

Such an arrangement would represent a significant warming of relations between the monarch and his younger son, potentially providing Charles with an opportunity to reconnect with his grandchildren.King Charles and Meghan Markle

The newsletter went on to promote two products from Meghan’s As Ever brand: a 2024 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and a gift set featuring her fruit spreads.

“For your next soirée, bring a bottle of our 2024 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc to open and enjoy together. Bright, refreshing, and made for lingering conversations,” the duchess wrote.

She also highlighted her Favourites, Gifted bundle as an ideal present for hosts, describing it as “a thoughtful gift to enjoy beyond the evening” that includes a giftable box of fruit spreads and chocolates “perfect for sharing around the table.”

Royal watchers quickly picked up on the timing of the newsletter and shared their reactions on social media, with many expressing critical views.

“So predictable,” one social media user wrote on X. Another commented: “It’s all SEO, PR and content now, isn’t it?”

However, others defended Meghan, suggesting the duchess looked “fresh and summery” despite all the backlash.

On Tuesday, Meghan issued another newsletter, this time writing: “The best summer tables are often the simplest.

“A loaf of crusty bread. Good cheese. Fresh fruit from the market. Something chilled to pour. A collection of little things guests can enjoy at their own pace.”
