Coronation Street fans have been sharing their heartbreak as Debbie Webster’s health continues to decline following her release from prison.

It was in recent episodes that viewers of the ITV soap saw the beloved hotel owner freed from behind bars following a successful appeal. As fans know, Debbie was sentence to more than two years in prison after she pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and causing the death of local vicar Billy Mayhew following a horror multi-vehicle crash that unfolded back in January.

But as those who watch Corrie also know, Debbie wasn’t responsible, but she took the blame after she was discovered in the driver’s seat, having been moved by her, brother, Carl Webster, who had stormed out of her wedding to Ronnie Bailey and got behind the wheel, drunk.

When, finally, Carl admitted his guilt over the horror crash, he soon backtracked when Debbie revealed she was his mum, and not his half-sibling like he had grew up believing. The news left a bruised Carl wanting to see Debbie punished and she ended up being sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.

During her time inside, Debbie’s health took a hit, after she was diagnosed with dementia last year. Since her release, it’s been clear that her symptoms have worsened. First, she was seen getting herself in some bother with her hotel guests. Tracy Barlow and Mary Taylor were seen meeting up with bride, her mother and mother-in-law at the hotel to discuss wedding flowers.

In Wednesday’s (April 8) episode of Corrie, viewers saw Summer spot Debbie, before marching over in search of answers about the night Billy died.

Summer outright asked Debbie if she was covering for someone, and wasn’t actually driving the car at the time of the crash. When Carl’s name was mentioned, Debbie tried to hurry away, seemingly giving Summer the confirmation she needed.

As Ryan Connor approached, a flustered Debbie ended up grabbing the hot plates he had just picked up from the kitchen and as she cried out in pain, Ryan encouraged her to drop the plates while trainee paramedic Asha Alahan rushed in to help. Carl also arrived to see the fiasco unfolding, but was confronted by an angry Summer who made it clear she knew what he had done.

Later, back the flat, Debbie asked Carl what they were going to do about Summer now that she knows the truth, and he vowed to sort it out. Meanwhile, Ronnie was more concerned for his wife, and as she sat with her hands bandaged as he cooked dinner, he suggested they seek some medical reassurance.

And it’s fair to say that fans were left saddened by the scenes as their concerns for Debbie grow. @frankham_joanne said: “#Corrie Watching Debbie slowing declining with her Dementia is so devastating. Heartbreaking scenes from the incredible Sue Devaney.” @Sjl170 commented: “This scene. Sue is simply fabulous. Poor Debbie, she’s a formidable, independent woman, but she looks so small, frail & vulnerable here. I hate that we are going to have to watch this dementia diminish her light going forward. #Corrie.”
