Mahomes Out Chiefs Add Former Steelers QB in Late Season Roster Move

With their season effectively decided, the Kansas City Chiefs continue to reshape the roster for the stretch run. On Saturday, the team officially signed quarterback Chris Oladokun to the active roster ahead of Sunday’s Week 16 matchup against the Tennessee Titans. The move comes as Patrick Mahomes remains sidelined after undergoing surgery to repair both his ACL and LCL. With Mahomes unavailable, Gardner Minshew is set to start under center, prompting Kansas City to add depth to an already thinned quarterback room.Oladokun’s promotion was part of a flurry of roster activity announced by the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday. Along with Oladokun, offensive tackle Chukwuebuka Godrick and running back Dameon Pierce were signed from the practice squad to the active roster. Linebacker Cole Christiansen and tackle Matt Waletzko were elevated via standard elevation, while linebacker Leo Chenal and tackle Jawaan Taylor were placed on injured reserve. The Chiefs also waived running back Elijah Mitchell.

For Oladokun, the signing represents another chapter in a long, quiet tenure with Kansas City. Drafted in the seventh round by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022, the 28 year old has spent nearly four seasons bouncing between the Chiefs’ practice squad and reserve future contracts. Despite being waived multiple times, he has never joined another organization.

Oladokun’s on field résumé remains limited. He has appeared in just one regular season game, attempting a single pass for five yards in 2024. At 6 foot 1 and 213 pounds, his value lies more in familiarity with the system than proven production, making him a logical depth addition at this stage of the season.

Kansas City’s injury report for Sunday underscores where the franchise now stands. With a 6–8 record and officially eliminated from playoff contention, the Chiefs have ruled out nine players, including Trent McDuffie, Rashee Rice, Leo Chenal, Jawaan Taylor, Derrick Nnadi, and several others. The approach reflects a clear emphasis on preserving health rather than chasing marginal wins.

While the decision to sideline so many contributors does not amount to an overt tank, the reality is that losses now carry less consequence than long term damage. Entering the offseason, Kansas City currently projects to hold the No. 12 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and owns just six total selections. The team also faces a significant salary cap challenge, sitting roughly $46 million over the projected limit for 2026.

Those constraints make the draft the most realistic path toward roster improvement. Areas such as the interior defensive line, edge rusher, and running back are expected to be focal points, with inexpensive rookie talent playing a central role in any rebuild. In that context, Saturday’s roster moves are less about Sunday’s result and more about managing the final weeks of a difficult season. With Mahomes rehabbing, Minshew leading the offense, and Oladokun providing emergency depth, the Chiefs are clearly operating with one eye on the future and the other on getting through the present intact.
