Thomas Markle, 81, has undergone emergency surgery to amputate his left leg below the knee after a blood clot cut off circulation and caused the limb to turn black, the Daily Mail revealed.
According to his son Thomas Markle Jr., the situation escalated with frightening speed.
“His foot turned blue and then black. It happened very quickly,” he said. After rushing his father to a local hospital, scans showed the leg could not be saved. Doctors warned it was a matter of life or death.
Markle — a retired Hollywood lighting director — was transported by ambulance to a major hospital in Cebu, Philippines, where he has been living since early this year in hopes of starting a “new life” away from the emotional strain of his estrangement from his daughter Meghan.
Doctors immediately took him into a three-hour operation, removing his left foot and lower leg. He is expected to undergo another procedure soon to treat a blood clot in his thigh.
“The next two or three days are critical,” Thomas Jr. said, adding that doctors were deeply concerned about infection, particularly sepsis or gangrene.
Markle is currently in intensive care but in stable condition.
Years of Declining Health and Family Distance
Thomas Markle has been estranged from Meghan since the 2018 royal wedding, despite raising her alone from age 11 to 18. Their relationship fractured after he posed for staged paparazzi photos before the wedding — something he believed would improve his public image.
Shortly afterward, he suffered two heart attacks and was unable to attend the ceremony. Meghan walked into St George’s Chapel alone and was later accompanied partway by King Charles — a gesture Markle called “incredibly kind.”
In recent years, his health has worsened significantly. He suffered a major stroke in 2022, temporarily losing his ability to speak, though he regained some speech through therapy. He has never met Prince Harry or his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet.
Markle moved to the Philippines in January, telling the Daily Mail he could no longer endure constant reminders of his estrangement while living in the U.S. or Mexico.
Doctors Warn the Next 24–72 Hours Are Critical
Medical staff treating Markle say the wound is healing, but infection remains a serious risk — especially at his age.
“At the moment he is stable and doing well, but that could change quickly,” one doctor said.
Thomas Jr. said the family has been touched by the global support, especially from the UK.
“Dad has a long road ahead. This was a major operation, but it saved his life. I hope Meghan can show compassion during this difficult time.”
The Sussexes have not commented publicly on the situation.
Earlier this week, Prince Harry made public appearances on The Stephen Colbert Show and at a conference in Canada, while Meghan promoted her new Netflix Christmas special, With Love, Meghan.
Despite everything, Thomas Markle holds onto one final wish:
“My only wish before I die is to meet my grandkids. I want them to know I love them and care for them.”
