Luigi Mangione Appears in Court in Shackles as Key Hearing Kicks Off

Luigi Mangione entered a New York City courtroom wearing shackles ahead of a pre-trial hearing in his state murder case.

Mangione appeared in the courtroom on Monday, Dec. 1, nearly a year after he was accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on the streets of midtown Manhattan.

Charged with murder in both state and federal court, Mangione will now face a hearing where a judge will consider whether his diary entries can be used against him in the New York case.

The shackles were taken off Mangione, wearing a gray jacket and a red and white plaid shirt with no tie and the top two buttons undone, after he walked into the courtroom.

New York prosecutors initially charged Mangione with murder in the first degree in furtherance of an act of terrorism and murder in the second degree as a crime of terrorism, but they were dropped after a judge ruled there was not enough evidence to suggest he had committed an act of terrorism.

Mangione is still facing nine felony counts at the state level, including second-degree murder. He is also still charged with terrorism at the federal level and could potentially be sentenced to death if convicted.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The killing of Thompson shocked the nation after the healthcare CEO was brazenly shot multiple times, as he headed toward an annual investor event, by a masked gunman.

A multi-day manhunt for the suspected shooter seemingly came to an end with the arrest of Mangione at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pa.

Mangione has been behind bars at the Metropolitan Detention Center since being extradited to New York following his arrest in December 2024.
