Clark Gable’s Five Marriages: Love, Loss, and Hollywood Tragedy
Clark Gable, one of Old Hollywood’s most iconic leading men, was married five times during his 59 years, spending nearly half of his life as a husband. Known as the “King of Hollywood,” Gable often said women were a vital part of his life.
Josephine Dillon (1924–1930)
Gable’s first wife, drama coach Josephine Dillon, was 17 years his senior. The couple met when Gable was her student and married in 1924 in Hollywood. Dillon played a key role in shaping Gable’s early career. Maria “Ria” Franklin (1931–1939)
Gable’s second marriage was to actress Maria Franklin, also older than him. They married in 1931, during a period when Gable’s career soared, winning an Oscar for It Happened One Night in 1935. However, the marriage was troubled, reportedly due in part to Gable’s temperament and alleged infidelity. Carole Lombard (1939–1942)
Gable’s third wife, Carole Lombard, is often remembered as the great love of his life. They married in 1939 shortly after his divorce from Franklin. Their time together was tragically short: Lombard died in a plane crash in January 1942 while on a war bond tour. Gable never fully recovered from her loss, keeping her memory private for the rest of his life.:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(999x0:1001x2):format(webp)/clark-gable-carol-lombard-portrait-111925-9129d343a5e34a7e84e6bf4e5476d018.jpg)
Lady Sylvia Ashley (1949–1952)
After seven years of being single, Gable married Lady Sylvia Ashley, previously married to actor Douglas Fairbanks Jr., in 1949. Their marriage lasted only two years, ending in divorce after Ashley claimed Gable wished to be single.:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(999x0:1001x2):format(webp)/clark-gable-lady-sylvia-ashley--111925-ec3c53b89f754d6ab4eb01a91868a084.jpg)
Kay Williams (1955–1960)
Gable’s final marriage was to actress Kay Williams. They met casually and became friends before their relationship blossomed into romance. The couple married in 1955 and had one child together, John Clark Gable. Gable died of a heart attack in 1960, just months before his son was born.:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(999x0:1001x2):format(webp)/kay-williams-clark-gable-spirit-st-louis-111925-ffd4db55d9c34e5ead42712ba5961d92.jpg)
Throughout his life, Gable experienced love and loss, with his marriages reflecting both the glamour and the hardships of Hollywood’s golden era.
