Heroic Navy Sailor Dies Saving 2 Children from Treacherous Hawaiian Waves

Master-at-Arms 1st Class Jeffrey Diaz, 47, of Florida, died in Hawaii on Nov. 22, 2025.

Hawaii is mourning a true hero. Master-at-Arms 1st Class Jeffrey Diaz, 47, a dedicated Navy sailor from Florida, lost his life this past Saturday after bravely rescuing two children caught in the fierce surf at Waiapua‘a Bay.

Diaz, stationed at the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Barking Sands, saw the children struggling against powerful waves and didn’t hesitate for a second. Without thinking of his own safety, he jumped into the water to pull them to safety. Thanks to his courage, both children made it safely back to shore. But in a heartbreaking twist, Diaz himself ran into trouble in the turbulent waters.

Emergency personnel from the Ocean Safety Bureau and the Barking Sands Fire and Emergency Services Department rushed to his aid, pulling him from the waves and performing life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, Diaz was transported to Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead.

His selfless act has left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. “We are heartbroken by the passing of our shipmate and friend, MA1 First Class Jeffrey Diaz,” Capt. Robert Prince, commanding officer of the Pacific Missile Range Facility, said in a statement. “We extend our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and shipmates who are grieving. His courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

Diaz’s heroism is a powerful reminder of the bravery and commitment of service members who put others before themselves, even in the face of life-threatening danger. Friends, family, and fellow sailors described him as courageous, kind-hearted, and always ready to help those in need.

“The Kaua‘i Police Department extends its condolences to the family and loved ones of Master-at-Arms 1st Class Jeffrey Diaz during this difficult time,” officials said, noting that foul play is not suspected. An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death.

Jeffrey Diaz will be remembered not just as a sailor, but as a true hero who ran toward danger when everyone else ran away. His sacrifice saved lives and his legacy will live on in the hearts of those who witnessed his bravery. In a world that often celebrates fame, Diaz’s courage reminds us that true heroes are measured by their actions, their selflessness, and their willingness to risk everything for the lives of others.
