Pennsylvania Democrat John Fetterman has never shied away from challenging the left flank of his own party — and his latest appearances on Fox News underscored that reputation once again
In two interviews that aired Friday and Saturday, Fetterman openly rejected the anti-Israel and anti-capitalist positions gaining traction among some Democrats. He noted that prominent figures such as New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have been increasingly vocal about their socialist leanings and criticism of Israel.
During an appearance on Saturday in America with eigKaylh McEnany, Fetterman was asked about a recent House vote condemning socialism. Nearly half of House Democrats—47 percent—declined to support the resolution.
Fetterman said he found that astonishing.
“If you go anywhere people have lived under socialism, 100 percent would vote to condemn it,” he said. “I’ve talked to people in former socialist countries, and they say it’s a disaster. They can’t believe America is even debating it.”
He added, “Bad ideas just won’t die. I don’t know why our party keeps entertaining them, but I strongly reject it. And of course, I would’ve voted to condemn socialism if that vote came before the Senate.
His criticism extended to the growing anti-Israel sentiment among new Democratic candidates. In a Friday interview on The Story, Fetterman warned that portions of the party are “becoming more and more anti-Israel,” noting that some candidates have made opposition to Israel a central theme of their campaigns.
He also blasted the Democratic Socialists of America for what he described as unreasonable and presumptuous pressure on Mamdani regarding Israel-related positions. Addressing Mamdani’s claim that he could seek the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Fetterman dismissed it as “empty threats,” emphasizing that the U.S. is not a member of the International Criminal Court.
The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024 over alleged war crimes in Gaza.
Fetterman’s remarks come at a time when he continues to face serious health challenges. Earlier this month, the senator was hospitalized after collapsing during a walk near his home in Braddock. Doctors later determined he had experienced a ventricular arrhythmia, a dangerous irregular heartbeat that can lead to sudden cardiac arrest.
The episode caused the 56-year-old senator to become light-headed and fall, resulting in minor facial injuries. In typical fashion, Fetterman responded with humor afterward, saying, “If you thought my face looked bad before, wait until you see it now!”
This latest scare follows the stroke he suffered in 2022, which he admits nearly pushed him out of politics altogether. In his recently released book, Unfettered, Fetterman gives a candid account of the private struggles he has endured while serving in public life. The book also sheds light on why he has increasingly broken with progressive Democrats on issues such as immigration, Israel, and the government shutdown that paralyzed Washington for nearly six weeks this fall.
