A Chicago MMA fighter, Isaac Johnson, 31, tragically died after being injured during a bout on Friday night at Cicero Stadium, a suburb of Chicago, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. No cause of death has been disclosed
Johnson was taken by ambulance to Loyola Medical Center at 8:38 p.m. local time and was pronounced dead at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, a spokesperson for the town of Cicero confirmed.
He was competing in a heavyweight Thai boxing match at the Matador Fighter Challenge, an event promoted as “the ultimate MMA and Thai event, where local warriors battle it out in high-stakes, high-intensity matches.”
Event promoter Joe Goyita expressed his grief:
“This is a post I hoped to never make. Last night, one of the fighters in our event, Isaac Johnson, collapsed towards the end of his fight. Medical attention was provided on-site, and he was transported to the hospital. I was informed around 1:30 a.m. this morning that he didn’t make it.
“I don’t have the words to express how I feel right now. All I can say is my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and teammates. We will know more once the medical report is released.”
