Kansas City Chiefs fans witnessed history on Monday night ā and a touching show of brotherhood between two NFL legends.
During the Chiefsā 28ā7 victory over the Commanders, Patrick Mahomes fired a third-quarter touchdown pass to Travis Kelce, marking Kelceās 83rd career TD ā tying franchise legend Priest Holmes for the most touchdowns in Chiefs history.
As the crowd erupted, Mahomes quietly picked up the touchdown ball ā not for himself, but for his teammate.
āHeās breaking all the records now,ā Mahomes said. āHeās all about the team, so I wanted to make sure he gets that [ball]. Hopefully, we can get another ball for him later this season when he breaks the record.ā
Kelce, now in his 13th NFL season, nearly retired during the offseason but chose to return ā possibly for one last run. And Mahomes made it clear how much his teammate means to the teamās legacy:
āHeās the true Chiefsā Chief,ā Mahomes said proudly. āHeās been here through it all, helped set the culture with Coach Reid, and showed what it means to play for Kansas City. I was lucky to come in and have that guy to rely on.ā
šŖ From setting records to setting standards, Kelceās story isnāt done yet.
Next up: a showdown with Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills ā and another chance for Kelce to make history.
