Louis Tomlinson opens up about Liam Payne’s death one year on: “It’s something I’ll never really accept”
Louis Tomlinson has spoken candidly about still processing the loss of his bandmate Liam Payne, one year after his tragic death.
In a heartfelt interview with The Independent published on Saturday, the former One Direction star revealed that Payne’s passing on 16 October 2024 has brought the surviving members — Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, and Niall Horan — closer together.
“The best kind of friends are the ones where, when you eventually do meet up, it’s like no time has passed,” the 33-year-old singer explained, acknowledging that conflicting schedules often make it hard to reunite. “It’s also just amazing to see everyone doing so well in their own right.”
Tomlinson admitted, however, that he will “never accept” Payne’s sudden death at just 31.
“I naively thought that, at this point, I’d unfortunately be a little bit more well versed with grief than other people my age,” he said, reflecting on losing his mother Joanna Deakins in 2016 and his sister Félicité in 2019. “I thought that might mean something, but it didn’t at all.”
His voice breaking, Tomlinson added: “It’s something I’ll never really accept. I don’t think.”
According to The Sun, Tomlinson and Malik are set to reunite for an upcoming Netflix documentary project that will take them back on the road, revisiting their years in the band and reflecting on their memories of Payne. Filming reportedly began earlier this month, with a projected release in 2026 and a multimillion-pound deal already secured.
Payne tragically died after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 16 October 2024.
In the wake of his death, the band members issued a rare joint statement through Page Six: “We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing.”
Tomlinson’s raw honesty comes just two days after the first anniversary of Payne’s death — a loss that continues to weigh heavily on the hearts of his former bandmates and fans around the world.
