Mick Abrahams — the original guitarist for Jethro Tull and founder of Blodwyn Pig — has died at the age of 82.
The news was confirmed by Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson on the band’s website. Anderson said Abrahams had been battling serious health issues for around 15 years that eventually took him off the stage and out of the spotlight.
“It is with great sadness that we learned yesterday of the passing of Jethro Tull founding member Mick Abrahams,” Anderson wrote, calling him a “powerful and lyrical guitarist” and a key force in the band’s earliest days.
Anderson shared stories from the late ’60s — tiny bunk cabins, creative clashes, and the wild early Tull years. He joked that when he wrote “Fat Man” in 1968, Abrahams thought the song was about him (it wasn’t) — and added that Mick was actually the “trim, good-looking guy” of the band back then.:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(576x0:578x2):format(webp)/mick-abrahams-122425-5db8bbd06ee947bc8f95be70e90b4252.jpg)
Their partnership lasted less than a year before splitting over musical direction — Anderson wanted to branch out; Abrahams wanted to keep things blues-rock and raw. But the respect between them, Anderson said, never went away.
Born in Luton, England, in 1943, Abrahams helped launch Jethro Tull in 1967 and played on their debut album This Was. He left the band in 1968 and went on to form Blodwyn Pig, scoring two U.K. Top 10 albums before heading into a long solo career.
Health problems later changed everything. Abrahams revealed he’d suffered two heart attacks and a stroke in 2009, saying it limited his ability to play guitar — something that “upset” him deeply.:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(749x0:751x2):format(webp)/jethro-tull-122425-9e2a2aeca4f94b518488fbab97ccc382.jpg)
Despite that, his impact is locked in rock history: fiery blues tone, swagger onstage, and the sound that helped shape early Jethro Tull.
Ian Anderson ended his tribute with condolences to Abrahams’ family and friends — and a nod to a musical legacy that still roars.
